Pavlína Kvita
POSTOJ A RYTMUS
9. 2. – 5. 5. 2024

Vnímá jej ovšem v kontextu dalších základních typů staré šamanské tradice – léčitele, vizionáře a učitele. Pro figury bojovníka volí koncentrované, cílené postoje/pozice magického charakteru. Jejich pojetím současně připomíná vlastní ranější tvůrčí etapu, kdy ji fascinovala futuristická dynamika. Právě propojení dávné archaičnosti a pohybové formy dodává sochám specifické vnitřní napětí. S archetypem bojovníka jsou spojovány kvality úcty a respektu, ctění mezí a hranic, odpovědnosti, ukázněnosti, správného nakládání s mocí, chápání sil přítomnosti, komunikace a postoje. Ten tvoří zásadní obsah i v dnešní podobě budovy – o řadu kvalit zdůrazněných ve výstavě možná usiluje leckterý pravidelný návštěvník bazénu či fitness centra Paláce AXA.

Pozn. Charakteristiky archetypu bojovníka jsou převzaty z publikace: Angeles Arrienová, Archetypy šamanské tradice. Duchovní cesty vnitřního bojovníka, léčitele, vizionáře a učitele, Portál, Praha 2000.

For many years, Pavlína Kvita has been exploring sculptural possibilities of rendering symbolic meanings of her inner world, a kind of personal mythology, the process of becoming aware of the present in a latent form, the correlation of basic mental powers or principles. In her current exhibition, she focuses on the archetype of a warrior as a form of an individual spiritual journey. Yet she perceives it within the context of other basic types of an old shamanic tradition, including healers, visionaries and teachers. For her figures of a warrior, she chooses concentrated, targeted stances or postures of a magic nature. At the same time, with her approach, she recalls her own earlier creative stage when she was fascinated by the dynamics of futurism. It is the very combination of the archaic nature and the form of movement which bestows her sculptures with a particular inner tension. The archetype of a warrior is associated with such qualities as respect and reverence, honouring limits and boundaries, responsibility, discipline, correct handling of power, understanding the forces of the present, communication and stance. Nonetheless, we do not associate those values merely with the process of cultivating one’s own inner strength falling under personal development. They are, in fact, intrinsically present in everyday reality. Including, for example, in the favourite literature of the artist’s 4-year daughter Robin (the Lego ninjago magazine), action comics stories of legendary ninjas endowed with many outstanding skills, including the art of fight. In her exhibition, Pavlína Kvita combines the figures of the warrior archetype with masks of a ritual nature. Those are rather particular shields defining boundaries. They bear simple sign references to individual mental qualities but also to the ancient forces of the basic elements. The precise definition of their shapes is effectively enlivened by painterly colour accents. Pavlína Kvita often employs dynamic sign figural stylization which she further enhances by using special bases for her sculptures, carried out in collaboration with Roman Kvita. The theme of the exhibition as a whole corresponds, in a thought-provoking manner, with the very essence of the original Hotel AXA which is sports- oriented. This concept forms the basic content also in the current appearance of the hotel building – after all, quite a many of regular visitors to the swimming pool or the fitness centre in Palace AXA might be striving for the very qualities accentuated in the exhibition.

Note: The characteristics of the warrior archetype have been borrowed from the book by Angeles Arrien.

Archetypy šamanské tradice. Duchovní cesty vnitřního bojovníka, léčitele, vizionáře a učitele (The Four-Fold Way: Walking the Paths of the Warrior, Teacher, Healer, and Visionary). Prague: Portál, 2000.

PAVLÍNA KVITA (born 1988 in Valašské Meziříčí) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague between 2009–2015 (sculpture atelier by Jaroslav Róna and Lukáš Rittstein). In 2012, she took part in a training in the atelier of Nicole Wermers as a visiting teacher at the same institution, and in 2013, she completed a stint at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. She has won numerous awards in tenders for the execution of sculptural works, including e.g. The Statues for Prague 3 (1st place – her Altar is placed in the park at the Vítkov Hill), 2014; The Statue for the Town of Nový Bor (2nd place), 2017; Memorial to the Victims of World War I in Klatovy (3rd place), 2018; a work of art for the Modřanský cukrovar residential district (1st place), 2023 (in collaboration with Roman Kvita). Since 2010, a series of her solo exhibitions has taken place. Among the most recent ones, let us mention e.g. Anima, Cifra Gallery, Doubice, 2021; Myth Game (with Jakub Tytykalo), The Chemistry Gallery, Prague, 2021; Josef Jíra Gallery, Malá Skála, 2022; Nestabilita věčnosti (Unstableness of Eternity), Centre of Contemporary Art EPO1, Trutnov, 2022; Hluk mezi námi (The Noise Among Us, with Roman Kvita), PRÁM Studio, Prague, 2023.
