Australia: South Australian private schools facing complaints over ‘gender discriminatory’ uniforms

South Australia’s Equal Opportunity Commissioner has slammed private school uniform standards in the state, saying the enforcement of gender stereotypes limits students’ potential.

Dr Niki Vincent said South Australia’s “attitudes to uniforms are stuck in another age” and warned private schools could face complaints from parents if standards aren’t changed.

“Making girls wear skirts and dresses while boys wear shorts or pants encourages children to adhere to set gender roles and perpetuates damaging stereotypes that can limit a child’s potential,” she told The Advertiser.

“It singles people out as different and it’s potentially quite damaging and discriminatory.”

The Commissioner has met with concerned parents over the matter and said that, if no progress is made, their complaints could result in tribunal cases and the schools forced to adhere to gender-neutral policies." Read more via 9News
