About London Photographer JC Candanedo

I’m JC, and I’m a Queer, Catalan-Panamanian socially-engaged Visual Artist based in the UK.

I use photographic processes and mixed-media to investigate issues of Identity, Diaspora and Migration, and participate in collaborative projects and community-based initiatives that promote social change. By working with different communities, my intention is to bring attention to issues that might otherwise go unnoticed and create a sense of solidarity and connection among people who share common struggles.

In all my projects, my main concern is to improve the lives of the Community members I work with and find ways in which the visual arts can influence and affect society. This can include creating awareness about a particular issue, challenging stereotypes, building new narratives, and promoting positive change. I'm passionate about using the visual arts to encourage Social Transformation.

My work has been longlisted for the National Portrait Gallery’s Taylor Wessing Awards, shortlisted for the Royal Photographic Society and recipient of a Silver Award at the AOP Photography Awards. My photos have also been featured on the BBC and The Guardian.

Alongside my own projects, I offer Creative One-On-One Mentoring Sessions and Consultations, and Talks, Webinars and Workshops to help creatives turn their ideas into projects, successfully manage their projects from inception to completion, and run a practice with a social orientation while creating projects for Social Transformation.

I am a Member of the Board of Trustees of Axis, an independent UK-based charity dedicated to strengthening and sustaining a thriving visual arts community by encouraging and facilitating an increase in good practice in the visual arts, and a Fellow of the Center for Social Impact Strategy at the University of Pennsylvania.

I am a member of the Association Of Photographers - AOP, and a Students' Career Mentor at the School of Art of Kingston University.

I co-host the podcast The Other Checkbox alongside Sandy Abdelrahman in which we explore feelings of belonging and representation of the ‘other’ ethnic groups in the national statistics in the UK.

Ultimately, my goal is to use my work to help make this a Better World.

If you have a project you'd like to discuss, or any questions you would like to ask, just get in touch. I'd love to hear from you!
