Over the summer, the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) sought input
on steps it can take to foster a vibrant public and private capital market in the province to improve access to capital, create new opportunities for investors, while providing appropriate investor protection. Several preliminary ideas were included to elicit feedback from market participants on enhancements that can be made.
In its submission, the IIAC expressed support for the ASC’s efforts to examine how it can use and adapt regulation to accommodate and leverage new technology to improve capital market efficiencies, reduce costs and provide investors with enhanced information and analysis. How clients prefer to interact with and be served by financial service providers is changing, and it is critical that regulation adapt to the new realities while ensuring a level playing field among service providers.
In developing solutions, the IIAC highlighted the importance of a consistent and integrated approach among regulators to ensure that piecemeal efforts do not result in inefficiencies.
