עפיה זכריה אינה שם מוכר בתולדות האמנות הישראלית. למרות שהיא אישה, מזרחית, ויצירתה ידועה לחוקרות אמנות היא דמות נשכחת. האופוס מאגנוס שלה הוא דירת שיכון בשלומי, מצוירת מהמסד עד הטפחות ובה אובייקטים (בעיקר בובות ופסלוני חרסינה) שבחלקם התערבה ומאחרים יצרה מייצבים.
היא יצרה בדגמים חוזרים , אבסטרקציות של דימויים פיגורטיביים אותם צמצמה לקווים נוקבים. אפילו ראיון טלוויזיה בערוץ 2 ב 1996, שנים בהם הייתה זו עדיין מדורת השבט, ומספר כתבות לא יצרו עבורה מקום . על ביתה – יצירתה בשלומי מורה שלט חום כשל אתרי טבע ומורשת ועליו כתוב “הבית המצויר”,
ללא ציון שמה. מעט הפוקדים אותו מגיעים בדרך כלל לראות אקזוטיקה ולא עבודת אמנות פואטית שצפונה בה סערה והיא פתח מתבקש לדיון על מגדר, התקה תרבותית , פוליטיקת הזהויות הישראלית ושלל נגזרות האפליה וההדרה של מדיניות פיזור האוכלוסייה הישראלית שהציפו את התודעה בזכות הסדרה “סאלח כאן זה ארץ ישראל” והתערוכה המעולה “אריה שרון: אדריכל המדינה” המוצגת כעת בביתן הלנה רובינשטיין .
זכריה צרכה לקבל מקום רב הרבה יותר בזיכרון התרבותי שלנו ולא רק בהקשר המזרחי המתבקש . הזיקה בין עיצוב החזות שלה לבין עיצוב החזות של אביבה אורי למשל מרתק.
מעניין לחשוב על זכריה בימים בהם מוקרן הסרט מודי Maudie בכיכובם של סאלי הוקינס אית׳ן הוק, בקולנוע במוזיאון תל אביב (ובמקומות נוספים). מוד לואיס 1903-1970 הייתה אמנית שיצרה בנובה סקוטיה בקנדה, אזור שלא הצטיין בתחילת המאה הקודמת בחיי אמנות ערים. בתחילת דרכה ציירה כרטסי חג המולד ובהמשך ציירה ציורים קטנים היא סבלה מארטריטיס שהלכה והחמירה ויצירתה הגדולה הוא בית מגוריה הקטנטן שגודלו כגודל חדר ממוצע (4.1 x 3.8 מ”ר) המוצב היום בשלמותו במוזאון Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (במבנה שלה ב Halifax). הבית הועבר לשם ביוזמת אזרחים שפעלו להצלתו אחרי שהוזנח לאחר מות בן זוגה של לואיס ב 1979.
לואיס התחבבה על קהלים גדולים עם הציורים הצבעוניים, השמחים- תמימים במבט ראשון והיא נמנית על אותה רשימה של אמנים נאיביים אהובים כמו Grandma Moses. המחשבה עליה בהקשרים של מגדר וכמאותגרת פיזית מאירה בהם צדדים נוספים. מעניין לחשוב עליה , ועל זכריה בהקשר של נשים המציירות בתים , מגדירות טריטוריה , מפקיעות אותה ממציאות שסביבן.

Some thoughts on Afia Zecharia and Maude Lewis
Afia Zecharia is not a well-known name in the history of Israeli art. Despite being a Mizrahi woman whose oeuvre is known to art scholars, she is a forgotten figure. Her magnum opus is a railroad flat in a social housing block in Shlomi which she painted from floor to ceiling, and a collection of objects; she intervened in some and made installations of others. Her painted patterns are repetitive, abstractions of figurative images she reduced to schematics forming bold statements.
Not even her televised interview in 1996 on Israel’s Channel 2 and several features in the print media did not create a place for her. Her home is indicated by a brown sign used for historic and nature sites, but the few visitors who come usually expect to see something exotic, not a poetic work of art embodying a tempest leading to a discussion of gender, cultural displacement, Israeli identity politics, reflecting the multiple results of the discrimination of exclusion caused by the policy of distributing the population of the new arrivals to Israel in the early years of the state.
It is interesting to think about Zecharia now that the film Maudie is being screened in movie theatres (starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke), and in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Maude Lewis (1903-1970) was an artist living in Nova Scotia, Canada. At first she painted Christmas cards, then small pictures. She suffered from chronic arthritis, but her major work is her small house (4.1 x 3.8 meters) moved in its entirety into the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax, through a civic effort who wished to preserve the house which had fallen into a state of neglect after Lewis’s husband died in 1979.
Maude Lewis is beloved by large audiences for her joyously colorful paintings, which at first glance seem naïve. Thinking about her in context of gender and as a physically challenged individual illuminates additional aspects of the works. Interesting that both Maude Lewis and Afia Zecharia painted their homes and defined a territory, removing each one from the reality surrounding her.
