Lithuania's Kaunas to test new waste-to-energy plant

BNS 2019.12.04 15:00

A waste-to-energy combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Kaunas, built by a joint enterprise of Lithuania's Ignitis Group and Finnish energy group Fortum Heat, will undergo tests later this week.

During the first weeks, equipment testing will involve the use of natural gas, and upon confirmation that all installations work as expected, the first shipment of waste will be brought to the production facility, probably in late January, Ignitis Group said.

Household waste and non-hazardous industrial waste will be burnt at the plant to produce heat and electricity.

The total costs of the project stands at around 160 million euros, and the plant is due to become operational in the first half of next year.
