Massive Losses Ahead: Finnair to Cut Its Normal Capacity by 90%

Finnair, the flag carrier and largest airline of Finland, has announced that it will drastically cut capacity by 90% in alignment with a critically low demand impacted by the coronavirus.

As of 16 March, Finnair said it has immediately started reducing the number of flights to gradually cut the capacity by 90% until 1 April, 2020.

“Finnair will start transitioning to the limited network immediately and will cancel between 1,500 to 2,000 flights from March 16 to March 31. (…) We will cancel flights from our systems gradually, and at this we are cancelling flights until the end of June”, said the carrier in a statement.

Unless Finland itself decides to tighten border controls, after 1 April Finnair still expects to maintain some domestic and international routes “with a limited number of weekly frequencies and possibly changed schedules”.

In terms of domestic flights, Finnair plans to leave Kuopio , Mariehamn, Oulu, Rovaniemi ones. During Easter time the network could be additionally supplemented with the following destinations: Ivalo, Kittilä and Kuusamo.

What concerns European routes, if the following destinations will not be affected by authorities’ air travel restrictions, Finnair will carry passengers to Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Munich, Paris, Stockholm and Zürich.

In case travel ban is lifted in Denmark, Russia, Norway, Latvia and Estonia, Finnair will fly again to Copenhagen, Moscow, Oslo, Riga, St Petersburg and Tallinn.

Also, Finnair will continue its international service to Tokyo.
