NDI poll: 82% of Georgians support EU, 74%- NATO membership

Poll results released today by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) show that 82 percent of Georgians approve joining the EU, while 74 percent of those surveyed approve the Georgian government’s stated goal of joining NATO.
Compared to the previous survey of the NDI held between July 13-29, 2019, the amount of supporters of Georgia’s membership in the EU has increased by four percent.
As for NATO, when asked whether the respondents approve or disapprove of Georgian government’s stated goal to join NATO, 74 percent of them answered that they approve, 14 percent disapprove and 11 percent answered that they didn’t know.
The results reflect data collected from November 19 - December 13, 2019, through 2,180 face-to-face interviews around Georgia, excluding the occupied territories.
NDI’s survey work is funded by UK Aid and was carried out by the Caucasus Research Resource Centre (CRRC) Georgia.
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) has released the results of recently conducted polls earlier today, saying that people’s trust in state institutions and leaders has declined, and the number of Georgians who evaluate the current government’s performance as ‘bad’ has increased from 49 per cent in March 2018 to 64 per cent today.

The ruling Georgian Dream party says that in the coming days they will have ‘deep discussions’ with NDI Georgia Director Laura Thornton as ‘there are questions regarding their polls which remain unanswered.’

NDI Georgia will have a new head as the term of Laura Thornton, who took the post in 2014, is expiring. It has not been announced so far who will replace Thornton.

Georgian parliamentary parties signed a joint statement earlier today in which they urged NATO and its member states to continue close partnership with Georgia. The parties signed the document ahead of a NATO summit on June 14 in Brussels which will not be attended by the alliance’s partner states Georgia and Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stated that only member states will participate in the 2021 one-day summit.
Georgians remain concerned about the state of the economy and healthcare, and are pessimistic about the direction of the country and the performance of institutions, polls released by the National Democratic Institute and CRRC Georgia earlier today say. According to the polls 61% are likely to vote in the October 2 municipal elections. However, 45% say that none of the parties are closest to their interests and nine per cent state that they do not know whom to vote for.
