To help artists affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Lithuanian capital Vilnius will turn into an open-air gallery. The Roofless Art initiative invites 100 artists to exhibit their works on billboards all across the city centre, said the press release by Vilnius municipality.

The project will also feature an online gallery with artwork that will not make it onto one of the billboards.

According to the organisers, Roofless Art aims to encourage people in Vilnius to get to know and support local art.

“Although the galleries are already open, there are still certain restrictions,” said Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius. “Therefore, […] we will turn Vilnius into a huge street gallery […]. We hope that it will encourage creativity and some of the [exhibited] works will find their place at Vilnius residents’ homes.”

The project will also be advertised abroad to introduce Lithuanian art to foreigners.

Roofless Art invites all professional artists or their host galleries to submit one selected piece of artwork until the June 19 deadline. There is no participation fee and all printing and exhibiting expenses will be covered by Vilnius municipality and outdoor advertising company JCDecaux Lithuania.

The opening of Roofless Art is planned on July 7. The artworks will stay on the billboards of Vilnius for three weeks.
