Some 10,000 people in Lithuania will receive training in using electronic communication technologies as part of a joint initiative between Google and the country's Economy Ministry.

Titled Growth with Google, the initiative was presented on Thursday by Economy Minister Rimantas Sinkevičius who said that the coronavirus pandemic increased the need for digital services and the demand for digital skills.

“We plan to train 10,000 citizens to use various means of electronic communication. This will include consultations for businesses, providing necessary instruments during the training period, and possibly beyond,” the minister said.

Vytautas Kubilius, the CEO of Google Lithuania, said new jobs would require digital skills.

“The labour market is sending signals that there might be unfilled jobs in Europe soon, because many people lack even the basic digital skills – and they will be a must in certain jobs,” he said.

Some 5,000 people and businesses might be trained by the end of this year, Kubilius said.

In all, Google Lithuania has trained around 25,000 people on basic digital skills in Lithuania since 2016, including 18,000 via digital workshops and during visits to the country's regions.
