Over the past few months, you’ve likely tried your hand at some craft or another. Maybe you’ve finally taken up knitting, or perhaps you and your kids have given paper weaving a go. Extended time spent at home has made us eager to find something to do with our hands—and that’s true even for Taylor Swift.

While she was secretly recording an album, the singer also found time to take up embroidery, a hobby that resulted in a very thoughtful gift for fellow singer Katy Perry. In May Swift mailed Perry a pink silk baby blanket, embroidered with stars, flowers, and the phrase baby bloom, noting, in the accompanying letter, that her most prized possession as a baby was a similar smooth-to-the-touch blanket.

We know that Perry—and hopefully her newborn daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom—is a fan of the color pink. After all, her nursery is totally done up in the hue. And Swift’s hand-stitched decorative accents make the peach-toned blanket all the more personal.

This kind of project is beginner-friendly, too. There are several techniques that can be used to embroider letters, though the backstitch is likely the easiest, and there are countless tutorials (and books!) that can help you master the art of stitching the flower of your choice. If you’re new to the craft, it’s a good idea to get in some practice first using spare fabric, ideally one that’s similar in weight to the fabric you’ll be working with. Soon enough you might find yourself adding an embroidered accent to nearly every textile in your home.
