A lot of people wonder about the lives of their favorite writers. They try to imagine what it is like to live in the world we writers find ourselves in and they gather information as they can.
How many movies have we seen about the tortured writer? The tortured painter? The tortured poet? I can name twelve without trying. The simple fact is that people find themselves interested in the lives of the people who entertain them. They buy magazines about the Hollywood life and read blogs, scan Twitter, and gather as much information about the people they read, watch, and listen to as they can find.
I have found myself obsessed with the offices and the studios of my favorite writers and painters. Have pored over pictures of the houses of artists like Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro. He has this huge head of Frankenstein at the foot of his staircase and a life-sized statue of Lovecraft in his study. It’s pretty cool, you ought to check it out.
Self-published writers are of interest to me as well and I often find myself writing them and talking to them about as many things as I can: process of their creation, simple things like the jobs they had before writing and the spaces they work in. I am obsessed with this kind of information and over the years I have gathered as much as I can. I have found friends and even made an enemy or two.
So when I started writing the third volume of my autobiography entitled The Keep I wanted to capture the life of a self-published writer and showcase how I got where I am now, the people I call friends and those I look up to. I’m leaving the enemies out.
Over the next few weeks I will begin to release excerpts from The Keep and show both the road I took to get here and the writers I found once I reached this place. Some of these excerpts will be showcased on my blog but I have also been lucky enough to get a few big fantasy blogs to host some as well.
So keep an eye out for the blog tour coming up. It will give a glimpse into the life I lead as a writer and the great minds I have found on my journey.
