Movember

The month of November is dedicated to Movember, a campaign focussing on men’s mental health and suicide prevention as well as promoting an awareness of prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

“Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.”

Swindon Support

The Swindon Live Well Hub provides a point of contact for anything related to improving a person’s health and wellbeing.

Swindon Borough Council’s website has a dedicated page focussing on mental wellbeing. It supports 5 ways to wellbeing, discusses how to recognise poor mental health and also signposts to relevant organisations which may be able to assist.

This voluntary awareness campaign for Swindon has been designed by the local community for the local community – a group of passionate individuals who wanted to change the culture of our town, and reduce stigma around men’s mental health conversations.

Swindon Libraries

We have a fantastic selection of books to support health and wellbeing. Here are just some of our current titles:

Although male life-expectancy at birth is now close to 80, on average only 63 of those years will be in good health. That’s one fifth of your life in poor health. The aim of this manual is to help you live as many healthy and happy years as possible. It’s for men who are interested in their health and wellbeing. And all men who are not.

This extensive and authoritative book is produced in association with Men’s Running and Women’s Running, containing chapters on health, food and nutrition, training plans, exercises, and equipment. It is for casual runners, from those taking it up for the first time and aiming to complete their first mile, to those eyeing up a marathon and searching for advice on how best to train.

Aged 24, Matt Haig’s world caved in. He could see no way to go on living. This is the true story of how he came through crisis, triumphed over an illness that almost destroyed him and learned to live again. A moving, funny and joyous exploration of how to live better, love better and feel more alive, this is more than a memoir: it is a book about making the most of your time on Earth.

‘ManFood’ is the definitive guide, tailored for men, on how to enhance their health easily and practically through their nutritional choices.

If there was a way to eat that meant you could slow ageing, lose weight AND prevent illness, wouldn’t you do it?

Professional athletes are making yoga a regular part of their fitness routines; and GQ, HuffPost, and Men’s Health have all advocated yoga for men.

With straightforward language and easy-to-follow steps, this title will teach you how to execute the 50 key yoga postures you need for greater endurance, flexibility, balance, and strength – no chanting required.

Rates of stress and anxiety are rising. A fast, nervous planet is creating fast and nervous lives. We are more connected, yet feel more alone. And we are encouraged to worry about everything from world politics to our body mass index. How can we stay sane on a planet that makes us mad? How do we stay human in a technological world? How do we feel happy when we are encouraged to be anxious? After experiencing years of anxiety and panic attacks, these questions became urgent matters of life and death for Matt Haig. And he began to look for the link between what he felt and the world around him.

Ant Middleton is no stranger to fear: as a point man in the Special Forces, he confronted fear on a daily basis, never knowing what lay behind the next corner, or the next closed door. In prison, he was thrust into the unknown, cut off from friends and family, isolated with thoughts of failure and dread for his future.

But fear is not his enemy. It is the energy that propels him. Thanks to the revolutionary concept of the ‘Fear Bubble’, Ant has learned to harness the power of fear and understands the positive force that it can become.
