Dear Brian,

This year has seen a resurgence in demand for single-use plastics as the world grapples with the health and safety protocols associated with Covid-19. We’re seeing it in everything from personal protective equipment to takeaway food containers. And while it is incredibly useful, the challenge of plastic waste pollution remains.

To find out what South Africa is doing to address this challenge, you are welcome to attend the 2020 Plastics Colloquium feedback session. This online event, hosted by Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Barbara Creecy, will be a progress report on commitments made at the 2019 Plastics Colloquium.

When: Thursday, 12 November | 8.30am to 12pm

Venue: Microsoft Teams Live

RSVP: Before 4 November

SOUPER RECYCLING INITIATIVE

The good people of Food Maniacs
have been very busy feeding the hungry in informal settlements across Cape Town. Now beneficiaries are exchanging recyclables for a hot meal, helping to clean up their communities at the same time! See how PETCO and PET bottle-to-bottle recycling partner Extrupet are playing our part in this amazing initiative.

GET THE SCOOP
FILLING THE GAP

The GAP College is a growing education and stimulation centre for differently abled children in Alberton, Gauteng. The learners, who hail mostly from economically challenged backgrounds, receive holistic support for special needs ranging from autism spectrum disorders to Down’s Syndrome and global developmental delays.

PETCO recently partnered with Extrupet to donate 20 individual desks made from recycled plastic. The learners look great in their sponsored T-shirts made from recycled PET plastic bottles! We’ve also connected the school with our recycling partner Mpact, to assist with the collection of recyclables.

KEEP IT CLEAN

PETCO is helping Keep It Clean Environmental Solutions live up to its name with an industrial-sized donation to get the Limpopo-based buy-back centre operating at maximum capacity again. Click the button to read the full story.

BUSINESS BOOST

For the circular economy to succeed, we need entrepreneurs who understand the value of recycling and how to run a business effectively. In October, PETCO partnered with Thulamela Local Municipality in Limpopo to sponsor a three-day training workshop in Thohoyandou.

More than 30 members of SMMEs and cooperatives turned out for the SAQA-accredited training in basic business skills, facilitated by Siyaloba Training Academy. Armed with knowledge and official certification, we trust they will go from strength to strength!

RECYCLING FOR RENT

Looking for recycling bins for your business but not ready to commit? You can now rent instead of buying! Postwink is boosting the circular economy with its Ecocylinder range of colour-coded bins for easy separation at source. Rent to reduce the flow of waste to landfill while also freeing up your cash flow. See their catalogue for more about the benefits and pricing.

(Disclaimer: PETCO doesn’t benefit from the sale of these products. We’re just sharing this forward-thinking initiative from one of our associate members.)
