Major resurfacing to take place in North Swindon during November

The essential resurfacing will be completed in eight phases and forms part of Swindon Borough Council’s major maintenance programme where more than £5.2m is being invested in the Borough’s road network.

Oakhurst Way, which runs from Tadpole Lane to Thamesdown Drive, will be the first road to benefit from the resurfacing and the work will be split into five phases.

The Council’s contractor will begin the work on Monday, 9 November and, in order to complete the resurfacing as quickly as possible, the road will be closed between 8am and 6pm each day. It is expected work in this location will take approximately two weeks.

Access will be maintained for local residents and diversions will be in place for other motorists. The Council has also been working with local bus companies, who will amend their services accordingly. Letters are being sent to local residents informing them of the work.

Once the Oakhurst Way surface has been upgraded, the contractor will move onto Lady Lane and the roundabout to the north of The Blunsdon Arms. The work is scheduled to take place over two days on Friday, 20 November and Monday, 23 November.

Following this, resurfacing works at Elstree Way at the roundabout to the south of The Friary Toby Carvery (24 and 25 November) will take place.

The final phase, the Manor Farm roundabout to the rear of the Orbital Shopping Park, will utilise overnight road closures between 8pm and 6am on 26 and 27 November and also forms part of the resurfacing programme.

Daytime closures will remain in place for all schemes (with night-time closures used at Manor Farm Roundabout) and, as in the case of Oakhurst Way, access will be maintained to local residents. The works are dependent on the weather. Residents and motorists are advised to check the advanced notification boards for up-to-date information.

Councillor Maureen Penny, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Maintenance and Waste Services, said: “This resurfacing programme is the latest in a series of improvements we are making to Swindon’s road network with these four schemes being paid out of £2m we received from the Government’s Pothole Action Fund.

“Anyone who uses these roads and junctions will know they are in need of repair and this work will ensure they are in good condition ahead of the colder winter weather. We also have plans to improve the road surface along Thamesdown Drive in the new year.

“As with all roadworks of this nature, there will be inevitable disruption, but we ask local residents and drivers to bear with us to allow us to complete the work as quickly as possible.”
