JTF and The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals with various targets and indicators, established to address social, economic, and environmental challenges and create a future without poverty and hunger, and safe from the worst effects of climate change and loss of biodiversity. Although animal welfare is not explicitly mentioned in the SDGs, they can play a critical role in promoting a holistic approach to global well-being, including the welfare of animals.  Many challenges affecting animal welfare, such as habitat loss, climate change, and biodiversity loss, are linked to broader global goals, such as poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, and social justice. The SDGs can also provide a common language and framework for collaboration with governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses, and other stakeholders to address shared challenges. By addressing environmental sustainability, climate change, biodiversity, and other interconnected issues, the SDGs can contribute to creating a world that supports the health and welfare of both humans and animals.

The Joanna Toole Foundation is keen to operate in accordance with the principles of the SDGs.  We therefore encourage applicants for grant funding to be aware of the SDGs and, where feasible or appropriate, indicate how they are addressing the interconnected issues such as environmental conservation, climate action, responsible consumption and animal welfare in their work.
