About Us

The Business Planning and Support Services Branch (BPSSB) is responsible for delivering strategic forward-thinking solutions to support the successful delivery of ministry priorities. The BPSSB provides financial management services for correctional services and develops and delivers multi-year correctional services information technology projects. The Branch is responsible for researching, analyzing and preparing correspondence and communications for urgent and sensitive corporate and operational correctional files and facilitates improved communications between the ministry, police services and other justice sector partners.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As a Business Data Specialist, you will:
• preserve the integrity of business data through completion of merge/delete and business data management requests in support of business applications
• lead the continuous development of business data audit processes, performing business data quality audits and take corrective actions
• deliver application support to peers and front-line staff, and in all phases of application development projects
• develop, maintain technical documentation and oversee data integrity/merge delete testing of related application functionalities
• participate in the development of standards, processes, methods, techniques and controls
• establish and maintain tools, techniques, standards, documentation and performance criteria required for maintaining enterprise applications and ensuring quality control

How do I qualify?

Technical Knowledge and Skills

You have knowledge and experience of:
• mainframe, relational databases, and server and/or micro/personal computer system technologies (operating systems, application software, networks)
• emerging technologies for electronic service and internet/intranet deliveries
• theory and principles of systems design and development, and related methods, techniques, practices and standards
• Windows Operating Systems, AIX/Linux/Unix, relational databases and supporting tools and utilities.
• N-tier enterprise IT solution environments, including a fundamental knowledge of all aspects of the technology solution - server, network, Windows Active Directory, middleware, database
• Databases such as Oracle, SQL, Access; SQL and PL/SQL scripting and database management tools including TOAD for Oracle, APOS for BOE.
• IT Service Management (ITSM) concepts
• Programming language such as .NET, C++, Visual Basic, Oracle forms
• Structured Query Language (SQL and PL/SQL) and other tools to construct, test and execute scripts

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You can discuss client requirement, lead discussion of data maintenance options and technical processes among project team and stakeholders
• You can document work, explain analysis/recommendations, prepare procedure documentation and manuals
• You can elicit, explain, illustrate solutions and client's business requirements
• You can discuss impact on client's service delivery and achievement of business goals
• You can work directly with front line staff and stakeholders to understand details of data issues and business process impacts, investigate root cause, remediate or determine plan of action, document data changes required, design, develop, test and implement

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• You can assess complex business data issues and develop solutions
• You can address new business requirements or new ways of completing day to day tasks
• You can conduct intricate systems analysis and design
• You can evaluate and recommend new data management, data auditing techniques, and software and technology for acquisition

Other Essential Knowledge

• You have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
• You have the ability to acquire knowledge of government and ministry's IT plans, mandates, legislative framework, policies, programs, program delivery and business goals
• You have knowledge of records and information management standards and best practices
• You have knowledge of project management methodologies and experience in leading effective business application testing
