The Office of Jesse Teller

I love people. Let me get a little closer. I love readers. Let me tighten a little bit more. I love fantasy readers. Fantasy readers, fantasy writers, they speak the language I talk. They can look at something fantastical, and they can see something real and something true inside of it. I was raised in a family where, if the movie had a sword in it, what was the point in watching it? I was raised in a family where, when I said I wanted to tell fantasy stories for a living, I was screamed at. I was told that’s not a job. You can’t make money telling fantasy stories. And then they talked about me being a factory worker. Let me clarify, I love factory workers. People who work in factories are some of the hardest working people you’ll ever find. But I had a dream, and it was dashed. There was nobody in that family who could see any value in what I could do.

So when I started writing books and people started reading them, and I started talking to other writers, I had found my tribe. There was a young writer I was talking to, I was maybe 35, she was 14. I was trying to encourage her, and her mother and her mother’s boyfriend came into the room. They started talking about what we were talking about, which was her stories. Her mom started getting dismissive. Her mom’s boyfriend said, “Yeah, I’ve read her stories. They’re really weird.” And I looked at this girl, and I was enraged.

I said, “Her stories are not weird. She belongs to a different tribe than you do. She belongs to a different people. And she is doing exactly what we expect of her.” If you’re reading this, if you read fantasy and love fantasy stories, then I am doing exactly what you expect of me. And you’re a member of my tribe.

I wish I could invite all of you into my office. We could sit and talk and laugh and do and say all the things to each other that we’ve always wanted to say to somebody. I can’t have you all in my office. But I can bring my office to you. So I have started a channel on YouTube. It’s called Voices from an Unreal World. It has a format that gives it a little bit of structure, yet subject matter that is unpredictable and varied. I show things and talk about things that sit on my desk. I show features of my office that no one ever sees. I talk about my work. I talk about my friends. I talk about my life. And in every way, watching this show is like sitting with me in my office. I can’t have you all over. I wish I could. But I can bring my office to you. I post a new video every Friday. I write all the music for the channel myself, and I play it. This is pretty darn close to hanging out with Jesse Teller. And I hope you’ll come check me out.

Darker Secrets

For years I kept a blog telling stories of my life and the things that have happened to me that have shaped me into the person I am. In 2020, when the world kind of crumbled, I had to pair back expectations of myself. But I’d like to announce that I am starting my blog up again. So look for links on social media and I’ll tell you more of my darker and darkest secrets.
