The built environment reflects the rules. Minimum car parking requirements are the worst kind of urban planning rule. Often introduced with good intentions, the end result is a city that is eaten alive by cars and parking. Thankfully minimum parking requirements are disappearing from New Zealand's cities by 2022. They should never have been introduced. https://lnkd.in/gADZEti

Waltham Forest Mini-Holland began a decade ago, transforming the borough's streets and spaces to favour walking, cycling, public transport and public life. A combination of vision, political courage and well-placed funding has shown that Dutch street design principles are transferrabel to the UK Ten years on, there's a two-day event (14-15 May) to mark the occasion, with site visits, tours and high-quality speakers. This should interest anyone who wants to know more about large-scale active travel schemes. "...another fabulous example of why we can't allow ourselves to be trapped and limited by current or projected car counts." Very well put. Think about what you want your street and surrounding environment to do. As long as general traffic level of service modelling holds sway over street design decisions, it will be extremely difficult to deliver liveable urban environments.
“You can’t get rid of 12,000 cars!” claimed critics when in 2017, Eindhoven proposed the revolutionary transformation of Oirschotsedijk. A former arterial road dissecting Philips de Jonghpark is now an accessible and delightful green space, reconnected by a 5.5 meter cycle path.

This is consistent with my personal experience. E-bikes don't replace cycling trips; they replace car trips, particularly in a hilly, spread-out city like Auckland. Journal article here: https://lnkd.in/gQvygg3D

Last night's Auckland Conversations event was a belter! Janette Sadik-Khan and Helen Clark talking about transforming cities. The future of urban transport is not flying cars, but better streets. Such a treat to meet Janette and her co-author Seth Solomonow, both of whom signed my copy of 'Street Fight'. Well done to everyone involved; a really energising, informative and uplifting evening. The evening was recorded and you can watch it here: https://lnkd.in/g7n2EzJ7 #UrbanDesign #Streets #BikeLanes #BestPractice
