The built environment reflects the rules. Minimum car parking requirements are the worst kind of urban planning rule. Often introduced with good intentions, the end result is a city that is eaten alive by cars and parking. Thankfully minimum parking requirements are disappearing from New Zealand's cities by 2022. They should never have been introduced. https://lnkd.in/gADZEti

So if parking does not take place within the development where will it take place? As is so often the case car usage will continue and parking will be displaced in to adjacent residential/commercial streets creating access issues there. Not 100% sure that is the correct solution either

Many would disagree. Many love their cars and their parking spaces. In fact, Australia is experiencing record car sales in 2021.

In the south east of England some cities would not be able to trade successfully without car parking. Some residential areas. Their roads, are car parks as garages are too narrow. The landscape gurus want parking to the rear. Highway engineers to the front. Welcome to an ever changing world. With electric scooters due to take off. What parking provision will we have. I do agree re minimum standards are a nightmare in the making.

Modern code parking requirements and ratio’s per land use category are too high..... that simple - especially in retail. Too much pavement too much waisted valuable land.

Absolutely agree. With some forethought maximum parking limits can be developed just as easily. City of Olympia, WA did it in the 90’s.
