We face twin environmental crises today. On one hand, a warming world is exacerbating the spiralling loss of various species, while on the other, the loss of nature will jeopardize our capacity to deliver on the 1.5 degree limit to global warming.
Nature’s reserves the world over are dwindling at rates unprecedented in millions of years. The way we produce and consume food and energy, and the blatant disregard for the environment that props up our current economic model, has pushed the natural world to its limits.
COVID-19 is a clear testament of our broken relationship with nature, and highlights the deep interconnection between the health of both people and the planet.
At the Earth Day Summit in April, Pope Francis said "We know that one does not emerge from a crisis the same: We emerge either better or worse... We need to ensure that the environment is cleaner, purer and that it is conserved. We must care for nature so that nature may care for us."
Thus 2021 is a “super year” for the nations of the world to collaborate like never before, through an integrated approach at both COP 15 and COP 26 to make the ambitious equitable commitments to protecting our common home.
All of us are needed. Join the Laudato Si’ Movement’s campaign to collect thousands of petition signatures and deliver these at the COP. Register at this link for a training to learn how to successfully collect petitions and raise our voices for creation.
