Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship launches women in entrepreneurship initiative

Women are one the fasting growing groups of entrepreneurs and the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship at Florida State University has launched the Women in Entrepreneurship (WIE) initiative to help the trend continue.

The FSU WIE will be dedicated to influencing, empowering and connecting students, faculty, staff, alumnae and professionals through collaborative programming, mentorships, a monthly speaker series, networking opportunities and more. The monthly speakers’ events will be hosted both in-class and as stand-alone events.

“We are proud to offer a focus on women entrepreneurs for the FSU community and beyond,” said Susan Fiorito, dean of the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship. “This initiative will help establish entrepreneurial role models for women while we acknowledge their accomplishments and work to continually innovate.”

The mission of this initiative is to inspire, instill and ignite women entrepreneurs throughout the campus community and beyond. To accomplish this, the program seeks to promote an awareness of the dynamic role of women in today’s entrepreneurial environment and establish a forum to help women grow businesses.

Those interested in getting involved with FSU WIE should complete the interest survey here.

The percent of female owned businesses has increased by 114% in the past 20 years. Of the 4.4 million start-up businesses launched in 2020 about 30% are female owned. With that in mind, the initiative will encourage business skills development, provide resources and highlight local events and networking opportunities.

At the outset, the initiative will be focused on highlighting women entrepreneurs — students, staff, alumnae and community partners. This may expand to encompass a student board, alumnae board, mentorships, and much more.

The FSU WIE (Women in Entrepreneurship) initiative is led by Jim Moran College’s Britain Riley and Shelly Griffin.
