How can we recruit older youth to join our Units?
Fall is a busy time in Scouting! As we introduce all we have to offer, keep in mind what families of today are searching for when it comes to joining a program.
- Families want to feel like they are a part of something. They want to know their contribution matters. No one wants to join an "organization", they're joining a tribe and creating their village.
- Parents and guardians want to hear what the benefits are to joining Scouting. Share with them that Scouts is a leadership program, talk about your community service projects and possible college scholarships awarded to Scouts.
- Kids want to hear about the features! Camping, activities, adventures and all the fun that comes with being part of a Scouting family. Keep them coming back with a pre-planned calendar full of a variety of events!
- Plan a "friend activity" as a part of your weekly meetings. The friend activity is usually what potential Scouts enjoy the most (at first). A leader vs. Scout kickball game, gaga ball, ice cream social, outdoor movie night - these fun activities will strengthen the bond of your Unit. This will help with retention, Scouts won't want to leave their friends and the adults in their lives won't want to leave the community.
- Remind Scouts to invite a friend every week of every month. Recruiting is a year round effort!
