Jackie Auma is a sweet little girl. She has captured the heart of our entire staff, despite her tough upbringing. Jackie had a mother and father who loved her very much. Her mother was special needs, and both of her parents were HIV positive. Unfortunately, Jackie’s mom passed away in November, and her father passed away a few months later. Our hearts were heavy, but we are thankful that Jackie has an aunt who is willing to love and raise her. MORE ABOUT YOUR CHILD:
Your child lives in Nyanza Province, near Lake Victoria. Typical houses are constructed of corrugated iron roofs and mud walls. The primary ethnic group and languages are Luo.
The regional diet consists of maize, beans, fish, bread, cassava, rice, and potatoes. Common health problems in this area include typhoid fever, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and cholera.
Most adults work as laborers and earn the equivalent of $50/month. This community needs employment opportunities and better education.
North of the equator, Kenya is hot and dry. South of the equator lies the humid coast, the temperate highlands, and tropical Lake Victoria. Volcanic mountains and the Great Rift Valley occupy the west. Although the highlands around Nairobi are fertile, only 11% of Kenya’s land is farmed.
The majority of rural farmers and herders represent more than 40 ethnic groups. Forty-five percent of the population are Protestant, thirty-three percent are Catholic, and ten percent are Muslim. The rest practice indigenous belief. English and Swahili are the official languages.
Our sponsorship is a partnership with families in our community. We don't want to take responsibility away from the parent, but provide hope for families in overwhelming situations.
At Good News Kenya, we believe that while these children may live in a third world country, they are first world people in God’s eyes and in our eyes. We have hope that if we can give the children opportunities for education and a healthy lifestyle that they will have a future that can break the poverty chain in Kenya.
Children in our program are held to a high standard as we strive to disciple them. They are accountable to maintain good grades, be involved in a Christian community, show Christ-like behavior, and give back to their community. It is our priority that they receive the Word of God and continue to grow in their faith.
Elementary Sponsorship is $35/month.
High School Sponsorship is $50/month.
College Sponsorship is $75/month.
As your child advances to different education levels, we will contact you about your ability to increase your sponsorship donation. If you are not able, we will find a second sponsor to help with the education costs. Sponsors will receive a letter and update from their child at least 2 times per year. Our hope is that your sponsorship will not only be a financial commitment, but a commitment to pray for your child and their family. A sponsorship is a partnership between the sponsor and the child’s parents, as they partner together in providing for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the child. We believe that sponsorship programs can reflect the body of Christ, and we are thankful for your sponsorship!
