June Mabee is a lot of things. She's the girl next door. She's the best friend I ever had.She was my first kiss, as awkward as it was. And she's the last person I should have feelings for. Ever.

Two years ago, I cut all ties with her because I had no choice. No more late night phone calls, no hellos or goodbyes, not even a passing smile. I left her to wonder what happened to the us we used to be. We were best friends, and then suddenly...we weren't. And I know it hurt. But the truth would have hurt her more, and being anything with June would have destroyed my family.

For a while, we managed to exist a hundred feet apart with no connection at all. She changed schools. I kept busy. We existed, apart. But no matter how hard I tried to not think about her, I just couldn't stay away from the funny, adventurous, steadfast girl with wild green eyes.

She's back. We're seniors now. We've grown—all of us. And while I might be different, she's different too. She takes risks, stands up for herself and doesn't back down. The more we're forced together, the more I miss her. But for June to be a part of my story, I need to tell her the whole truth, everything that happened. And I'm not sure any of us are ready for that.* Varsity Captain is a friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers new adult romance told from Lucas Fuller's point of view. It's football, small towns, first love and lots and lots of kissing (and a whole lot more). You do not have to read Varsity Heartbreaker first, but it's super cool if you do. After works too. Binge the Varsity Series - now complete!*

I read a sample from the Hot Summer School nights Anthology and unfortunately I did not like this one ( Sorry - But I did adore Scott’s Wild Reckless)

Lucas is not a swoon worthy character he’s a dick. Through and through.

June has no character.

And Ava is dreadful. I wanted to gauge her eyes out with a spoon.

That’s not to say others won’t enjoy it I just couldn’t gel with the characters.

Maybe I need to read it as a whole book and get a proper feel for the characters?

This was book 4 in the series. It's from book 1 but Lucas' pov. I like that we got a good recap of book 1. And I like it from the H pov. As always great writing by Ginger. Great character build. Such a good story.

- the only clown here besides Lucas is myself for believing he would be found to have redeemable qualities and become more likeable in this story from his POV.

Lucas is still the watered down version of Jared from Bully by Penelope Douglas.

Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

When I first read Varsity Heartbreaker I was completely enamored with Lucas Fuller. Varsity Heartbreaker is told from the heroine's point of view but I could tell that there was so much going on behind the scenes when it came to her love interest, Lucas Fuller. I was so delighted when I saw that Ginger Scott had decided to bring us Lucas's point of view.

I am fairly certain that this book is considered a companion novel though I suppose it could be read all on its own without having read Varsity Heartbreaker. I definitely think that it would be beneficial and more enjoyable if you read Varsity Heartbreaker first though. Since I have read the entire series already, for the purpose of this review I will be reviewing it as a companion novel and not a standalone.

First of all, I just adore Lucas. He really did have so much on his shoulders and he was trying to make everyone else happy. He sacrificed the one thing that was most important to him, his friendship with his next-door neighbor June, to satisfy his parents and ultimately pay the price for their mistakes. After his father has an affair and his mother heads into a downward spiral because of it, Lucas's life changes. He changes to cope with everything happening in his life and I don't think that he liked the person that he became. He ghosted his best friend and lived the next two years trying to please his parents. His father has been trying to live vicariously through him since he received an injury playing football in college and he pushes Lucas to the extreme in football. Lucas has other dreams though and he struggles with trying to please his dad and hiding his true passion to go to MIT when all his dad wants is for him to go to Tennessee and play football. He is also concerned about his mother's mental state and has been sort of looking out for her since his father's affair. June had switched to a private school but circumstances lead her to return to public school again her senior year. With June so close, Lucas is having trouble keeping his feelings under wraps. Everything in his life culminates and Lucas has to make tough decisions and ultimately decide if he is going to live his life for someone else or for himself.

I really loved the emotional aspect of the story. It was so easy to slip into Lucas's shoes and feel his torment over the circumstances in his life. The author does an excellent job of making the reader empathize with Lucas.

This book centers around Lucas, but I would have loved to see more of the other characters as well. Tory is a big part of Lucas's life and while we do get to see a lot of him in this book, his character didn't feel as tangible as Lucas's character.

I really thought that the plot of the story was orchestrated quite well. All the bits and pieces of the story were just where they needed to be and came together nicely in the end. The author did a great job of creating conflict and mystery. The storytelling is excellent. The story flows perfectly in a steady rhythm that makes the reader feel completely comfortable. I have really love that quality in all of the books that I have read from Ginger Scott. I always know that I am going to get a quality story that is going to tick off all the boxes for me.

Overall, this was an excellent addition to the series that added a lot of value, especially for Lucas's character. If you are a fan of this series then I highly recommend adding this book to your TBR. If you haven't read the series yet then I would start with Varsity Heartbreaker, the first book in the series. If you are a fan of mature young adult stories with incredible writing and wonderful characters then you'll want to get in on this series!

This was addictive in the way that Ginger Scott books often are. The story itself was just ok for me, though. I wasn't a huge Lucas fan when I read the first book in this series, so I was hoping getting his perspective would help shed a little light on why he was such a jerk to June. It doesn't really, though. The reason for him not talking to her (which I always was thought was a little sketchy to begin with) is not really expanded on at all here. He would be a dick to her and then think "I acted like a dick to her" and go on with his day. His inner monologues revolve around the same things again and again and it's not really anything we didn't hear in the first book.

Varsity Captain is a second chance romance that has two people crossing paths some time later. Lucas and June have suffered at the hands of their parents through lies that drove them apart, taking a friendship that was everything to nothing. Questions will be finally answered that were left previously hanging in the balance and the angst will be seriously high and will have you on the edge of your seat. June will suffer at the hands of his Lucas's ex and her drama and torment. Their story will show us that the feelings that Lucas had for June never diminished and were always there lingering under the surface waiting to be released. This is a love story that will steal your heart in every way.

There's something to be said about having a favorite Author who always gives you a book you can sink your teeth into and simply, escape. I read several genres and when it comes to YA/NA Ginger is the Master.

This is the H's side of the first book in the Varsity series. Everyone has the fear that a book like this would be just a few words changed around. With Varsity Captain that is definitely not the case. Ginger gives Lucas a true voice in this flip side and I'm blown away. Truly. Ginger doesn't mess around giving us an inside look to how an H may actually feel and think. We get to experience his thoughts and emotions; making this a beautiful stand alone.

This Author's ability to draw you in, frustrate you, and keep you turning pages is unsurpassed.

Ginger is the Master of these kinds of stories and I will always dive in with excited anticipation. Her ability to give me these unique stories has never faltered making her a one-click buy. Every. Single. Time.

If you're looking for a fresh voice in the YA/NA genre, read this book. If you have read Ginger before, you're going to be delighted.

Well done Ginger. Very well done.

Honored to read this book as ARC, this is my honest review.

DEAR GOD LUCAS FULLER AND JUNE MABEE OWN ME! I thought I couldn’t love them more after reading Varsity Heartbreaker, but as always, Ginger Scott proves me wrong by offering me their story through the eyes of Lucas. They tug my heartstrings in all the beautiful and aching ways. I absolutely inhaled this book and I hate myself for it. Hearing his thoughts, though, help fill in holes from the VH that I didn’t know I wanted filled. Scott really does a brilliant job at getting inside the head of Lucas and letting us see how his mind works and explore his feelings across the board. As I am typing this review, I literally have that familiar itch to go ahead and already read it all over again. I don’t think I could ever get enough of their story. Varsity Captain is the cherry on top of this beautiful saga. You will NOT be disappointed diving head first into the world of Allensville Public.

This absolutely must be read with the first book in the series. (Personally I recommend reading them simultaneously)

This just doesn’t work as a standalone novel. The h is barely in this and, while the reader has a much better understanding of the H, too much of the story is lost without the first book.

I still feel like the shit that went on during 2 years they were enemies is glossed over too much.

One of the reasons I have so little time to review books anymore is bloody TikTok. I spend far too much time on that app for someone in their 30s, but it did lead me to this book.

I wasn’t aware this was book 4 in a series. I read it as a standalone and didn’t realise until after, so I think it’s safe to dive in.

I wasn’t overly enamoured by this. June was a bit bland for my liking and Lucas was a bit of a selfish dick. Plus the storyline lacked any real originality.

Original review: A Novel Glimpse

Note: This review is for an ARC provided by WordSmith Publicity and is my unbiased opinion.

When I read Varsity Heartbreaker I really wanted Lucas's point of view. Lucas was frustrating to say the least in that book. I just wanted to shout at him to give it up and admit to what was going on with him. The secrecy around his character was fabulous for the storyline with June, but it felt like something was missing. The thing that was missing was Varsity Captain. I am so happy that Ginger Scott decided to give it to us!

Being in Lucas's head wasn't all that fun in the beginning. If you've read Varsity Heartbreaker (which you should absolutely do before reading this book because this is a companion to that book) you know why. Getting his thoughts and feelings made his actions more understandable and him more likable. I didn't always love what Lucas chose to do, but I now have a better understanding of his actions. I also loved how this book wasn't just a copy of that first book in his POV, but gave us all sorts of new goodies to enjoy. It was honestly the perfect companion novel to Varsity Heartbreaker

This book is from Lucas's point of view. I really loved meeting him and learning about his history. I didn't like him at first, but he really grew on me as the book went on. I liked how he grew up and left his toxic relationships behind and matured. The way he cared about June was awesome. He messed up and owned up to his mistakes. Also, June carried a lot of spunk. She wanted to know the truth and wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted. The book does deal with serious topics as to many of this author's, but they are addressed really well. The serious topic is quite a sickening twist within the family, but I do like how the ending is done. I wish that there was a bonus epilogue or maybe even a sequel just about their wedding as I am a hardcore shipper of these two people. I highly recommend this book.

Absolutely loved Varsity Captain! We have Lucas Fuller's point of view of the first book in the Varsity Series and it will steal your heart! Lucas Fuller will make you hate him, but love him even more! Lucas was best friends with the girl next door, June, until he cut ties from her and ignored her for two whole years. Now June is back at school and their seniors. He tries to ignore her, but fate has other ideas. We get to dive deep into Lucas' feelings and thoughts and will have you hooked and on the edge of your seat. Lucas and June keep getting caught in each other's lines and eventually someone is going to snap. The Varsity Captain is another knock out novel by Ginger Scott that will have you feeling all the feels!

Having read Varsity Heartbreaker and other books in the Varsity world I've been looking forward to more! So when i found out about this one i knew i had to pick it up! I enjoyed this story!

I was so curious about this book when it was announced and when i found out it'd be from Lucas's point of view i wanted to get into his mind. I was so glad to jump back into Lucas and June's journey once again but in this new way! I really liked getting to dig deeper into this story. Once again, I loved how i felt so many things throughout reading their story!

With Varsity Captain, Ms.Scott has created such a good read that'll have you feeling so many things!

The last quarter of this year was a big ball of ahhhhhh. Which made reading hard as my brain just couldn't focus and writing reviews was impossible. However with that said I did read a few books and if I don't add them here I'll end up adding them to my TBR a dozen or two times because of my goldfish memory.

If you've read Varsity Heartbreaker, you know this story, but this one is from Lucas Fuller's point of view, which I loved, because you don't always get the guy's thoughts. This one also gave you some added content, which only added to the story, so overall, I really loved it. It was so nice being back in this world. Highly recommended!

A Different POV

This all is the lead up to Varsity Heartbreaker and its from Lucas’ point of view. He was a guy I didn’t care for at first but by the end I understood him better. I have to say that June’s story broke my heart.

Lucas Fuller, I’m in love with you!
This author writes some of the most satisfying mature YA, in my opinion.
It has all the angst of teens, not over the top or manufactured. Real life stuff. And it’s written so smart, with the emotions and the flow of the story is perfection.
She writes the butterflies of all those new and “first” experiences so beautifully and never fails to have me right there in the moment with the characters. Nervous, giddy and emotional. I feel vulnerable like a teenager. It’s really amazing and magical!
This is a return to the couple in the first book of this series from Lucas’ perspective. The first book was from June’s.
These two neighbors share a childhood past, they share hurt, lies and betrayal.
This story felt new and fresh. It was different moments and scenes. It didn’t feel like an unnecessary look back. I was excited, interested and completely invested in the story.
It made me absolutely adore Lucas! I understood him and my heart broke for him at times.
He’s a pretty amazing character, I loved his perspective, his moments and his time with June and his group of friends.
His family dynamic is a huge part of the story. It’s serious, it’s emotional and it gets unveiled throughout. It is a lot of drama in a sense, but it’s not written in a way that overwhelms or takes over the story.
I really love the emotional moments and the humorous ones. Great balance!
Oh, and the chemistry and heat is not lacking at all!
These two are amazing together!
I had all the butterflies, excited zings and heat I wanted!

This book is the other POV from Varisty Heartbreaker. So, we get Lucas Fuller's side of the story and get to see a bit more what happens when the doors are closed. While I was super excited for this, I don't feel as though I got too much more into Lucas' head. I did walk away disliking his father even more. June's personality didn't shine through in this side of the story as I expected it would. There were even times when I was a bit disappointed in Lucas' thinking - more so than in Varsity Heartbreaker.

I wish Scott would have shared more into the future and also what happened in the time June was at another school. A warning to those who have not read the first book: You will be a bit lost and should most definitely read that book first for a better experience with the story.

Such an unexpected surprise for those of us who loved and devoured the original trio of Varsity books, Varsity Captain was the extra cherry on top of what I consider one of Ginger Scott's best love stories ever. A part of me had almost forgotten the pain June Mabee and Lucas Fuller endured as their best friend status went from 100 to zero almost overnight. How they suffered from the sins and lies of their parents and fell out of rhythm with each other. As we now get Lucas's side of what transpired I was right back in all the painful glory as he pulls together his own fragmented life while finding his way back to his soulmate. And dare I say: I loved every single minute.

My goodness, the angst is on overload as answers to the many questions I had after reading Varsity Heartbreaker last year, are finally answered. Seeing how Lucas reacts to June being back in his school. Seeing the torment she has to endure at the hands of the evil Ava. And knowing deep down that his affection for his next-door neighbor never waivered. This is YA at its very best and Scott has proven herself once again she is a master at crafting these beautiful stories.

June is as stoic and caring as ever. She takes everything in stride until the dam finally breaks and I was overjoyed at getting to witness Lucas being her rock once more. Seeing through his eyes what a fool he has been and knowing that he was finally on the path to making things right for his future and for both June's past and present.

I don't blame this author for wanting to be back in Lucas Fuller's world. Although there is plenty of heartache as he takes charge of his life with disappointment at every turn when it comes to his father, in particular, there are also the lighter moments with his best friend Tory and both touching and passionate times with June that made all the agony at being apart from his girl easier to forget.

I highly recommend this entire series that features wonderful characters and all that comes with being young and in love. Ginger Scott certainly has her pulse on the YA genre and is a go-to for me when it comes to this particular brand of romance.

5 solid stars!

I'm always excited when an author retells a story from another perspective, and that is what Ginger Scott has done in Varsity Captain. I'd read Lucas and June's story before in Varsity Heartbreaker, Book #1 in the Varsity series, but that book was told from June's POV. With Varsity Captain, we get inside Lucas's head, and it gives their story an entirely new feel.

I'll admit that when I first started reading this book, many of the details of Lucas and June's story were a little fuzzy, but it only took a few chapters for so much to come rushing back in. I've always adored this couple. Friends for years, they could have become more, until Lucas put a sudden stop to all communication with June. He had his reasons, but June wasn't aware of them. For two years, he gave her the silent treatment, but then she came back to his school and he was forced to be in her presence. Lucas wants to tell her the truth, he wants to admit to his feelings for her, he wants a life that is entirely different than the one that he is supposed to be working toward. Lucas wants a lot of things, but in order to get them, he'll need to put himself before his family for a change.

Although I knew the basics of this storyline, I was surprised by how quickly this story drew me in and didn't let go. I couldn't get enough. Seeing the story from Lucas's perspective, there were so many new details and events that really made me better understand his character and the reasoning for his actions. Where my heart broke for June in Varsity Heartbreaker, my heart broke for Lucas in this story. Although I hated so many of his decisions, it was his loyalty and need to please others that were at fault, and I couldn't really blame him for that.

You can totally read this as a stand-alone novel, but if you enjoy a solid YA sports romance, then I recommend that you read the entire Varsity series. Ginger Scott has proved herself to be one of my favorite YA/NA authors. Every single one of her books give me all the feels, and this one is no exception.
