SHORTENED SETTLEMENT ON THE HORIZON?
In 2017 the securities settlement cycle in Canada and the U.S. was shortened from 3 days (T+3) to 2 days (T+2). Discussions have progressed in the U.S. to potentially accelerate the securities settlement cycle further to one day (T+1) or less.
The close interconnection between U.S. and Canadian capital markets will again necessitate alignment between both countries. The Canadian Capital Markets Association (CCMA) is engaging with the IIAC and the industry to be ready to shorten Canada’s settlement cycle if and when the U.S. announces plans to do so.
