Virginia Middle School Hosts #CyberSmart Family Night
On Tuesday, October 19th, Virginia Middle School hosted a “Cyber Smart” Family Night. The evening was part of the middle schools after school program, funded by a 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grant.
These family nights are open to all families of the school, regardless of enrollment in the program. A meal is provided before students go inside to play games and complete other activities. Parents, guardians, and other family members participate in discussions and presentations from guest presenters.
As the name suggests, this particular evening focused on technology “smarts” and helping parents understand risks and other aspects of their kids using apps and services online.
Presenters spoke about everything from online tracking to the importance of being mindful of how and when students are using technology.
These individuals represented diverse backgrounds on the topic and included:
Chris Whitt, Bristol Virginia Sheriff’s Office
Tracey Dingus, BVPS Instructional Technologist
Tammy Childress, Abuse Alternatives Inc.
Jason Matlock, Virginia Middle School Principal
Logan Childress, BVPS Emerging Technology Specialist
Alison Meredith, Holston IT
Matthew Davis, U.S. Marshals Service
Jim Satterwhite, U.S. Marshals Service
Many thanks to Jessica Buchanan and Vanessa Meyers, coordinators of the 21st CCLC program at Virginia Middle School, for organizing and hosting this great family night event!
