Kaeuper Medieval Manuscript Fund: Alumni Reflections

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Kaeuper Medieval Manuscript Fund. We loved reading what our alumni had to say about Professor Kaeuper, and we hope you do, too!

Dr. Kaeuper retired in 2021.

Mr. Marc Zlotnik (BA ’71): "I am grateful to Professor Kaeuper for giving me the flexibility to pursue an honors thesis on medieval Russia, which put me on the path to a successful and rewarding career as a Russia specialist."

Mrs. Naomi Kalmus (BA ’73): "Dr. Kaeuper was one of my favorite professors. I took multiple courses with him. I loved the way he combined the history with information on the culture, art and literature of the time."

Mr. Clifford Rones (BA ’78): "Forty-five years later, I still appreciate the scholarship and joy of learning fostered by Professor Kaeuper. I will carry it with me always. Congratulations Professor Kaeuper on your lifetime of learning and inspiration to students."

Dr. David B. Mustard (BA ’90): "Thank you Professor Kaeuper. You made a great impact on me!"

Mr. Brian Zimmet (BA ’91): "I took several classes from Professor Kaeuper while I was there. He was among the best and most memorable professors that I had in college, and brought medieval Europe alive for me."

Mr. Douglas J. Pratt (BA ’91): "The Richard W. Kaeuper Collection of Medieval Manuscripts is the most fitting legacy I could imagine. Through researching and synthesizing medieval documents for his seminars, I developed exceptional skills that have served me through graduate work and professionally. I have always considered my work under his tutelage to be the core of my undergraduate education."

Mrs. Alexandra Sharnoff Slade (BA ’91): "Dr. Kaeuper's enthusiasm for teaching, his specialty, his humor (Monty Python as an example of Medieval life, for example), as well as the care with his students came through all he did. He will always be one of the best memories I have of UR."

Mr. Jeremy Speich (BA ’99): "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize Professor Kaeuper’s contributions to the U of R. Personally, Professor Kaeuper rejuvenated my academic focus after struggling with my coursework in my first year. His courses in medieval history were fascinating and his personal interest and passion in the topic were evident in every encounter. On top of that, he was approachable and had a great sense of humor. Cheers to Professor Kaeuper!"

Mrs. Julie C. LaRue (BA ’09): "Prof Kaeuper was undoubtedly a wonderful teacher and researcher. I was an undergrad research assistant of his and learned immensely while under his tutelage. I cannot thank him enough."

Dr. Craig M. Nakashian (PHD ’10): "This is a token of appreciation for a truly wonderful historian, advisor, mentor, and man. I hope these manuscripts inspire future students to study the period that you have done so much to illuminate. Thank you for everything, Dick."

Mr. Joe R. Azar-Williams (BA ’19): "Congratulations to Prof. Kaeuper!"

Dr. Jeffrey McGowan (parent of 2020 graduate): "Prof. Kaeuper was my son Benjamin's honors thesis advisor, he was amazing. I was so happy Ben got to work with him."
