Dr Michael O. Martin Elected as an Honorary Member of IEA

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to IEA, Dr Michael O. Martin was elected as an Honorary Member of IEA at the General Assembly Meeting sessions that have been held virtually between 25-27 October 2021.

Dr Martin has been a long-serving and valued member of the IEA network for more than 30 years. As Executive Director of the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College, Dr Martin has led and contributed to a myriad of advances in assessment methods.

Since his early work on IEA’s 1991 Reading Literacy Study through TIMSS 1995, the founding of PIRLS in 2001, and now 24 years of TIMSS trends, Dr Martin has built a long-standing reputation for excellence in international assessment. With vigilance and good humor, combined with a deep understanding and appreciation of good measurement, Dr Martin has consistently worked to improve the quality of the methods, procedures, and documentation underlying each TIMSS and PIRLS assessment. This commitment to quality has not wavered in the past year, despite all the many challenges faced in the context of the pandemic and has served as a beacon also during his time as a member of the Technical Expert Group, which he has been a part of since 1992.

Commenting on the appointment, IEA Chair, Dr Thierry Rocher, said:

"This election also comes with a bit of a sad note. Because at the same time it also marks Mick’s retirement this year from his executive director’s position at the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center. And so, I would also like to take this opportunity to recognize his long-term service and commitment to both IEA and the wider field of education and large-scale assessment."
