Carl Angeloff

We are deeply saddened by the death of Carl Angeloff of Palm Beach Gardens Fl, and Pittsford, NY. Carl died on 1/17/22 at the age of 91, with his beloved wife Pamela at his side.

Carl was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1930, the son of first generation Macedonian immigrants, Nicholas Angeloff and Lusia Eliades Angeloff. His family moved to Rochester NY when he was one year of age. Carl graduated from East High School in 1948, where he was class President his senior year. He was a star basketball player at East High, where the local newspaper dubbed him the "10 o'clock scholar" because he had "high scores & high marks with equal facility". In 1949 Carl attended Columbia University in New York City, and later that year he was appointed to Annapolis. Carl ultimately passed the ROTC exam and finished his undergraduate education in 1953 by receiving a BA from the University of Rochester, in Rochester NY, where he graduated cum laude.

Carl spent the following 3 years as an officer in the Navy, serving onboard the USS Tarawa aircraft carrier during the Korean War. He served as legal officer for 3 years and was the staff legal officer for Rear Admiral Harry E. Sear, commander of Carrier Division 14 for 18 months. Carl finished his duty as a Lieutenant in the US Naval Reserves in 1956. At the time of his discharge, he was recommended for promotion to Lieutenant Commander.

Later in 1956, Carl went to Harvard Law School, where he graduated with an LLB, Magna Cum Laude in 1959. Carl also was named as an editor to the Harvard Law Review, and Vice Chairman of the Board of Advisors. In addition, Carl did post-graduate work in the Executive Development Program at the University of Rochester. Carl then began his legal career at Nixon Hargrave Devans & Dey, and later joined what came to be known as Robinson Williams and Angeloff, where he practiced law until becoming a partner in Edwards & Angel in Palm Beach Florida in 1985. His primary expertise was in the fields of real estate, banking, lending and asset based finance and commercial law matters. He represented numerous banks in both New York and Florida.

Carl was immersed in the law. Carl was instrumental in drawing a set of model forms for all phases of secured lending including mortgage lending. These drafts provided for compliance with relevant statutes and ordinances, and they provided a formal sequence of events to be followed in each transaction. Aside from being a timesaver, these model forms provided a safeguard against a vital point being missed by oversight. Carl later discovered that local firms in the area had adopted his format. In addition, while working as a practicing attorney for such clients as the Genesee Valley Regional Market Authority and New York States largest dairy cooperative he also found time to be a legal assistant to New York State Supreme Court Justice Clarence J. Henry for 10 years. (1960-1970)

In the mid 60's Carl became deeply involved in politics. He became friends with Robert F. Kennedy, and eventually ran his Presidential campaign in the greater Rochester area, managing a group of over 500 volunteers. The job was so consuming and so important to Carl that he took 3 months away from his law practice to devote to the RFK campaign. Senator Kennedy wanted to establish a program of volunteers in community service throughout New York State, and Carl was very involved in helping to conceptualize the program and in implementation efforts in the Rochester area. Carl was devastated by RFK's death as was much of the nation.

In the late 80's Carl became more involved with his undergraduate alma mater, the University of Rochester. He served on the Trustee's Council from 1986-1989, and then became a Trustee of the University in 1992, until becoming a Life Trustee in the early 2000's. One of his passions was Globalization and its effect on the world. He absorbed all the material he could find on the subject, and eventually taught Globalization and the World Economy including the complications of international banking and competing economic canons at the UR in 2003 and 2004 under the auspices of the History department. He was forever interested in the quality of education provided to students in the Rochester School District, and he encouraged those who were intimately involved to do their utmost to revive the system. He loved nothing more than talking to students, and throughout the later part of his life mentored many younger folks regarding their education and careers.

After retiring from practice from Jones Foster Johnston & Stubbs PA in 2000, Carl delved into arbitrations & mediations, belonging to the American Judicature Society and the American Arbitration Association National Panel of Arbitrators. He specialized in arbitrating large complex banking issues-some with millions of dollars at stake.

Carl was a council member of the Greek Orthodox Church from 1970-1979, and President of the church in 1974. He also received the Order of St Andrew in 1974 for his service to the church. He was a member of the Florida, District of Columbia and New York Bar Associations as well.

Carl was a serious scholar, and an intensely private man and a true gentleman, who treasured his close friends and family members. He lived to the fullest, and to the last-with vigor, pleasure and engagement and will be terribly missed by us all. Carl is pre-deceased by his parents, Nicholas and Lusia Angeloff, and survived by his devoted wife, Pamela Blank Angeloff; brother, Alexander Angeloff; and brothers-in-law, Thomas W. Blank (Wendy) and Kurt S. Blank (Robin). He also leaves behind beloved nieces, Jessica Blank Getman (Brian), Alexa Blank Groom (Michael), Andrea Angeloff Purcell (Tom), and Mary Kay Angeloff Lofurno (Gary); nephews, Jason T. Blank, and Adam M. Blank, plus numerous grand nieces and nephews. The family also wishes to acknowledge their debt to his wonderfully dedicated caregivers: Sheila Sulli, Maureen Hegarty and Arrelia Beard, and to his fabulous Neurology Nurse Practioner, Aida Santiago.

Per Carl's request, there will be no service at this time. The family plans a Celebration of his Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Carl's memory to the University of Rochester, Gift & Donor Records Office, PO Box 270032, Rochester, NY 14627, or to the Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, Fl 33131.
