Watermelons are a heat-loving crop. They love the long hot summers of a continental climate. Here in Canterbury New Zealand, they struggle--our generally cool and dry summers aren't exactly ideal
Ever the optimist, I plant watermelon every spring--the quickest-maturing varieties I can find--and usually I get a few fruits. This year I planted two varieties, one of which is yellow inside and out. Watermelon Gold in Gold F1 is weird and wonderful--a fun addition to our summertime feasts.
