Hollow's Row #1

Lovely Bad Things

Rate this book
He's the devil. And she's his wicked game.

Halen:
They say eyes are the windows to the soul—but when he looks at me through hues of slate-green and flaring blue embers, I’m terrified of what’s watching me from behind his clashing gaze, something primal and feverish that threatens to melt me like fire in ice.

I fear falling into Kallum Locke’s pitch-black soul.

But after I’m called to a crime scene to investigate the most gruesome act of violence to descend on the legendary town of Hollow’s Row, I have no choice but to turn to Kallum, to the man I had locked away in an asylum for the criminally insane.

He’s the leading expert on all things Nietzsche and occult. And now, to get answers, I’m forced to make a deal with the devil himself.

Kallum:
Really, eyes are the windows to the soul? Then I wonder what little Halen St. James thinks of all the cryptic eyes watching her in the killing fields… I wonder if the hairs on her delicate nape lifted away, if a thrilling shiver raced over her soft skin. She’s desperate for the answer, and she’ll do anything to uncover it—even make a deal with me, dangling freedom like bait on a hook.

But she’s far more tempting to sink my teeth into than any lure.

And the pain will taste twice as sweet.

this story requires an open mind.

because this is on the same level of crazy weirdness as the gargoyle king in riverdale season 3. with a little hannibal thrown in there for good measure. so if you can handle that, then im sure youre up for whats in this book.

because honestly, its odd. so very odd. but at the same time its academically dark, giving bacchanal in ‘the secret history’ kind of vibes. which is so totally my kind of thing. i loved the antiquity and philosophy of it all.

so if you like the strange occult, symbolic ritualism steeped in ancient history, and charming sociopaths, then this is the book for you!

✦ dare i say this was just pretentious and contrived as fuck.

✦ i feel like this book just tried too damn hard to do something, but it did absolutely nothing instead.

✦ the writing was truly annoying at times. you could read a sentence, and then have to reread it several times to even fully grasp it's meaning, IF there even was one.

✦ the serial killer hero was intriguing in the beginning, but he got more and more annoying the more he talked about the heroine's aRoUsiNg and iNfuriAtiNglY iNtOxiCatiNg scent. i swear it felt like he could be a mile away and still fucking smell her. are you a werewolf????

✦ despite the author trying to make me believe these two were super into each other, i felt no chemistry between them. i could look over all the plot holes and the writing style if the romance actually delivered, but sadly it did not.

✦ the fact that this will be a trilogy just makes me nauseous. i will definitely not be reading the next two books, i had enough, thank you.

➽ KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

'🅻🅾🆅🅴🅻🆈 🅱🅰🅳 🆃🅷🅸🅽🅶🆂 ' Is a suspenseful thrilling first full length book in author 'Trisha Wolfe's' 'Hollow's Row' series.

Get ready for one crazy ride with Halen and Kallum's story.

She was a specialized criminologist first on the scene scrutinizing all the clues left behind building profiles for the investigators. He was an expert in esoteric philosophy. Put these two together to work on a case with them being the best of the best and you know off the field and on things are going to heat up.

'𝕴𝖙'𝖘 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖑𝖔𝖛𝖊𝖑𝖞 𝖇𝖆𝖉 𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖓𝖌𝖘 𝖙𝖍𝖆𝖙 𝖘𝖙𝖊𝖆𝖑 𝖎𝖓𝖙𝖔 𝖔𝖚𝖗 𝖙𝖍𝖔𝖚𝖌𝖍𝖙𝖘 𝖎𝖓 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖒𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖑𝖊 𝖔𝖋 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖓𝖎𝖌𝖍𝖙 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖙𝖊𝖒𝖕𝖙 𝖚𝖘 𝖆𝖈𝖗𝖔𝖘𝖘 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖊 𝖇𝖊𝖙𝖜𝖊𝖊𝖓 𝖌𝖔𝖔𝖉 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖊𝖛𝖎𝖑.'

I don’t even know how to go about writing this review up because my mind is still shut away within the pages of this book, this author never ceases to blow my mind, she’s sharp minded, stepping where many rarely step, it’s unconventional, and has your mind racing trying to connect the puzzles pieces with what’s divulged.

thumbnail-LBTTeaser7

Twists and turns which left me gasping in there wake not believing the words in front of me, needing, wanting, craving those answers which are never in my grasp.

This does end on a cliffy and I for one can not wait to get thrown back into this suspenseful thrilling read.

If you want a challenging read then definitely pick this one up and give it a shot.

"It's the lovely bad things that steal into our thoughts in the middle of the night and tempt us across the line between good and evil."

Kallum Locke.. fully tattooed, smoking hot philosophy professor. Also diagnosed sociopath. Really manipulative ritualistic murderer? That's still up for debate 😅

Halen.. criminologist and psychologist. She has a really traumatic past that still hasnt been completely revealed yet. I mean the peieces are coming together but I still have questions.. lots of them.

I think before going into this book you should have some grasp on the three main philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle because I didn't, so half of this was me trying to do a crash course on ancient philosophy. When I said, "idk if I'm smart enough for this book," I meant that 😂😂 although it's mostly explained afterward, I spent most of the first half confused af.

The tension is fantastic.. like really damn hot. The plot twist gave me whip lash because WHATTTT? On to book two because I'm intrigued and like I said before confused 😅🤦🏻‍♀️

I read Lovely Bad Things because I really wanted to read another thriller but it wasn’t on Kindle Unlimited. Kindle recommended Lovely Bad Things instead and I thought I’d give it a try. I was able to read it in one day but I’m still kind of annoyed that it took that much time. I initially loved the idea of a forensic psychologist working on suspect profiles for gnarly and grisly crimes. Even better, she needs the help of a sociopath who she is responsible for having committed to a mental hospital. Very Hannibal-like! I wanted a thriller and crazy crime to solve. What I got was a mess of western esoteric philosophy, butchered Chaucer, mediocre crime scene investigation, and distracting “romance.” There are quite a few plot holes and everything takes so long that there isn’t a thrill to be found among the wreckage. I’m disappointed because the kernel of the idea was good or I wouldn’t have started it. I was left feeling the author was trying too hard to link everything together. If she had focused more on the mystery, we could have had something that would have reminded me of Thomas Harris or Sting Larsson. Unfortunately, she worked too hard on convincing me of the connection between Halen and Kallum and how brilliant they are. I didn’t believe either aspect. The mystery and the crime scenes are disturbing and for that I’ll give her a huge compliment, which I know sounds horribly wrong to say. I’ll go try to find a thriller that truly thrills me.

It’s the lovely bad things that steal into our thoughts in the middle of the night and tempt us across the line between good and evil. Those torturously beautiful sins that provoke our deepest, most deviant desires. It feeds us in the dark, stoking a frail flame into an inferno we can no longer resist. She is my flame. And I am all but pleading for my muse to burn me alive.

Holy. Effing. Mindf*ck. This book! What did I just read?!
The devil is in the details, and the details are inside that devil’s head. And I’m about to throw the doors of hell wide open to let him roam free.

A criminal profiler and a sociopath serial killer? This is the type of psychological thriller dark romance my dreams are made of and no one does it quite like Trisha Wolfe. I mean, if you know, you know. And if you don't know, read Born, Darkly immediately. But I digress.
The abyss looked at me the day Kallum first laid eyes on me and, if I’m not careful, he’ll pull me right into the pitch-black void of his soul.

This is a story in which you won't see up from down. It's so full of twists and turns that it leaves you reeling at the edge of your seat with a head of questions. Holy WOW!
That is his sinful seduction. And my sin is the desire to be seduced. His evil calls to mine.

On the hunt for a dangerous serial killer, Halen is desperate for answers. So desperate, that she'll request the assistance of an even more dangerous killer who she was responsible for putting behind bars six months ago.

Kallum Locke is a dangerous sort of genius. This is a man whose darkness is a deep abyss full of secrets, but his allure is even deeper. And the further they get into the investigation, the deeper into his void he pulls Halen.
Oh, god…”
“I will make you see god for damn sure.”

What I love about this story is how complex it was. This is not just a hunt for a serial killer, it's so much more. There's philosophy and the occult, and it's as fascinating as it is frustratingly confusing.
I’m okay with being her sickness. I can even be her antidote.

The way it's written reminded me a little of the movie Memento, and holy sh*t, I was so here for it. With every new detail that gets unearthed, you get deeper and deeper into this f*cked up story. And every single time you feel like you have it figured out, a new twist gets thrown in that has you questioning everything. I'm so desperate for the next book, I don't even know what to do with myself!!

“Whoever fights monsters should see to it they don’t become one”

I have been a fan of this author's writing for a very long time and the one thing that I can say with certainty is that she's twisted AF!! My goodness what a messed up dark and depraved rabbit hole we fell down. I need flashlights, warm liquor and a really really good therapist right now because the things that went down in this book???!

thsi-shit-is-too-crazy-what-the-fuck

Criminologist Halen has one goal in mind and that is to solve the recent killings that has shook her small town. They say in order to get what you want, sometimes you have to make a deal with the devil and for Halen, she's going to do just that. But what happens when the devil in disguise takes you on a journey that is so depraved, you begin to question everything

"It’s the lovely bad things that steal into our thoughts in the middle of the night and tempt us across the line between good and evil. Those torturously beautiful sins that provoke our deepest, most deviant desires.

Going into this story I already knew that this was going to be a dark psychological thriller but man…. This was messed up!! I can't even articulate what the heck I read half of the time and don't even get me started on that ending. What was that??!

This ends on a cliffhanger and trust me when I tell you that you're going to be chomping at the bit for even more answers. If you're a fan of mystery psychological thrillers, then you're going to enjoy this one.

“Want will drive you right into the maddening depths, I assure you. But you have to want with a fire, with a passion. The day you stop wanting, is the day you decide to die. I know this, because I believed I’d never find my muse. Unfulfilled until the end came for me. Bored. Apathetic. Uninspired.”

𝐅𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐅#𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆. 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐘. 𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑. 𝐎𝐅. 𝐒𝐈𝐍. 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐒. What in the hell did i just read you ask. Well let me tell you. First this is my first book by Trisha Wolfe and damn does this woman have a way with words. This might be 4.5 read but I'm way too happy and thrilled to give it anything less than 5 deranged stars. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝. I have completely immersed myself in the atmosphere she created, giving me the opportunity to get inside the mind of each characters and visualizing through their eyes every scene depicted in front of me. That is talent. But the lore, Oh the lore is where my mind completely short-circuited but in a good way. 𝐔𝐩 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐮𝐩. 𝐈 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐝𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲.
Every aspect of this book was written to captivate and ensnare the reader in a web of wickedness. This was twisted, disturbing, passionate, full of carnal steam, with so many kinks that my poor depraved heart needed a moment to breath. 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐭. 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐦 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐲𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐢 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐬𝐨 𝐢 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. This truly was the most spellbinding, intriguing, macabre, dysfunctional story i have read in a while.

“Before I even saw you, I felt your pain. It called to me like a siren, my muse of heartbreak. I wanted to taste it, to feast on it, your pain is that irresistible. If you had let me that first day, I would have dropped to my knees and devoured every last drop of you, just so you could breathe…so I could fucking breathe.””

I am a fan of everything dark, I have read many thrillers and watched so many horror movies I'm downright obsessed. Every year i have a horror movie marathon on Halloween and many of them are about serial killers. That concept is something that i love, and I'm not talking about the one dimensional killers collecting every cliché down the road like hoarders type here.
No I'm talking about the 𝐂𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝, 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫, 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐧𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬. Those that makes your blood pump so fast you feel like your heart is gonna explode, that is what i am fascinated by. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐳𝐳𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲.
Now i don't really have that same obsession-fascination-addiction or whatever you want to call it, when it come to real life serial killers and murders. The reality of a life taken is not something i can look away from and not care about. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬... Well Satan have mercy on my soul, cause this book was the personification of every word above. I am doomed and obsessed. I could write more details about the case or characters but I honestly believe it would ruin the story and frankly, the blurb says it all.

“It’s the lovely bad things that steal into our thoughts in the middle of the night and tempt us across the line between good and evil. Those torturously beautiful sins that provoke our deepest, most deviant desires. It feeds us in the dark, stoking a frail flame into an inferno we can no longer resist. She is my flame. And I am all but pleading for my muse to burn me alive.”

Three words: Mind fu*king blowing
I'm confused.I'm lost.I'm speechless
The best part?
I love it.

"It’s the lovely bad things that steal into our thoughts in the middle of the night and tempt us across the line between good and evil."

I've been waiting for Trish to push that publish button for Lovely Bad Things,  especially after reading the first three chapters. At this point everyone is aware anything this woman writes I'll read it in a heartbeat, no whatsoever questions asked.

Hollow’s Row has a reputation for bad things.

Don't doubt that one bit.

I've said this once and here I'll say it again.Trisha's writing style is absolutely peculiar and gripping. The way this woman has the gift and talent of spinning a damn story, it can't be expressed into words.

"My need for her is tangible. She’s carved into my goddamn flesh."

The story is what my dark depraved heart has been craving for as long as I can remember. From demented and unhinged characters to riveting and compelling plot twists, everything is perfection.

"But nothing in this universe is more connected than you are to me, Halen.”

The story had me at the brink of ripping my hair out. The book is like a killer sudoku puzzle, where everything is there infront of you but you can't just seem to make the connection. It drives you crazy to the verge of insanity, where every now and then you have to stop and stare and the wall and go "what the...fuck..."

Kallum locke and Halen St.James are the ultimate definition of crazy. Their chemistry so intoxicating it could burn people alive loll.

“Before this is over, you’re going to beg me to fuck you right out of your mind.”

Only problem? Having to wait until the next book in the series gets released. While I try not to lose my morality patiently, veryyy patiently sit and wait. 😍
*kicks rocks* *sulks in the room corner*

All in all, if you want your mind to be fucked with, then this book is definitely your cup of tea.

Halen is a criminologist who studies crimes scenes in order to make a profile in the most bizarre of murd3r cases. The book begins as she’s finishing up the Harbinger case and puts Professor Kallum Locke away for a string of murders. He pleads insanity and is sentenced to a psychiatric facility. But as Halen begins a new case, she realizes that she needs Kallum’s philosophy expertise, she gets him out. And the two of them have an obsession that’s threatening to swallow Halen whole.

THIS BOOK WAS SUCH A RIDE. I can’t even begin to describe how much this book gripped me. The writing style was lyrical, the characters had depth, the mystery surrounding the serial k!ller cases was insane. Kallum is obsessed with Halen, but she’s also obsessed with him.

I loved this book and I’m immediately diving into book 2 (there is a cliffy!)

Wanted to love this. I loved Babel, The Secret History….anything with a dark academia undertone. This was trying to do something, maybe I need to go to book 2? I loved the Nietzsche, philosophical, occult references. This book had a lot of things that it had going for it…jury is still out if I will go to book 2.

The author comes across as very clever. Clearly, she is very intellectual. I need to let this one marinate and come back to it.

Imagine a slow burn romance between Hannibal & Clarice, add in a serial killer mystery that will completely fuck with your head, and add tons of FBI profiling.

Our FMC is a profiler and studies the crime scenes for extreme cases. Towards the beginning of this series, her testimony puts our MMC away in an institution for a murder. Until she later decides that she needs his help on a case.

She asks him to help her because his academic research is relevant to understanding the case and he also has the ability to think like a killer.

He’s an arrogant, cocky, Hannibal type character who jumps at the opportunity to work with her because he’s completely obsessed with her.

This story follows them as they work together to find the killer, while dealing with tons of tension between them.

It’s a very complex story, but if you’re a fan of Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and shows like Criminal Minds, this is for you.

It’s a series where you’re meant to be kept in the dark and confused. And you’d also have to finish all three books to get your answers.

I rated this a 4/5 starts because while I was super intrigued by the concept, I was confused most of this story. Once I got into book two, I got exhausted with the story and completely lost interest.

I listened to the audiobooks, and while the audiobooks are absolutely incredible, I’d recommend either reading them yourself or doing a dual listening & reading experience. This story is confusing and I think I would have understood more and enjoyed the story more that way.

Apparently my previous review was deleted from here and I’m not sure why. I tried my best to remember everything and rewrite it as best as I can.

Psychological thriller meets steamy romance. I swear every single time I listen to an audio, I feel like my head is going to explode with the twists and turns.

And this one features so much - occult killings, a serial killer brought in to help find a new one, philosophy, and so much more. It’s such an amazing listen!

I will say that since it is multiple books, there are parts that are unanswered or seem confusing, but I’m assuming these will be answered as the series progresses

It does end in a cliffy, and I’m dying for more already!

Goddamn. GOD. FUCKING. DAMN.

This story is a work of art. It’s taut and tense as hell. The energy of the plot and the characters crackles off the page. The dialogue between Halen and Kallum is equal parts beautiful and sad and funny and dark. I had no idea where this story was going to go and it kept me guessing Every. Step. Of. The. Way.

As a writer, I am absolutely jealous as hell of some of the stunningly gorgeous, evocative lines and descriptions. Everything is well-balanced; I didn’t feel weighed down by those descriptions, I felt swept away by them. It is atmospheric, and dark, and richly beautiful, but not heavy. The plot surges along, and I both wanted to tear through the Lovely Bad Things and take my time to savour it.

This book encapsulates the best of “pantsing” - i.e. the type of author who “writes by the seat of their pants”. I’m also a pantser and I can tell you I was fucking gobsmacked at how elegantly and effortlessly Trisha balanced such an intricate, layered story. I know this sounds gushing but honest to god, from one author to the next, I just adore everything about this book. Honestly everything. It’s beautiful. It’s a piece of art in words. This is the best of what the Dark Triller /Romance genre can bring: it’s sexy, dangerous, though-provoking, tense, and hot as hell.

Kudos. I’m in awe. 15/5 stars and rocketed to the top five of my favorite books of all time.

…Still jealous as hell.

But wow. Amazing.

Halen St. James is investigating a case that she has to solve. She will stop at nothing and she will do everything, anything. Even ask for help from convicted sociopath Kallum Locke. The sociopath she testified against in court and sent to the asylum.

Kallum Locke has been locked up for a long time. Convicted by his obsession. An obsession he has had for a long time. So imagine his delight when that obsession comes asking for his help? Will he let his obsession consume him or will he make sure Halen burns with him?

"I want to be the one to find her.
I want to be the one to descend with her to the depths.
I want to be the one to devour her pain."

First, thank you @dani for the buddy read!! Love doing this with you gorgeous ✨✨

Think Criminal Minds x Bones x Supernatural vibes. You get this book.
Hollows Row is that creepy town in each one of these series that I love so much!!

Professor Kallum Locke.
Legit obsessed. I have no words. I am in love with this sociopathic man.
His obsession and his quick wit. Ughhhhh (completely ignoring the fact that he is an unhinged sociopath yeah?). I can't see I'm blind.

Halen and Kallum. Their back and forth. Enemies to Lovers. Slow Burn vibe is everything and I am living for it. And he calls her sweetness. I am done. Deceased. Dead. Thank you. Can’t wait for the next book!

"My need for her is tangible. She's carved into my goddamn flesh."

"How the fuck am I supposed to focus when you're soaking my hand through your fucking panties, Halen?"

Tropes:
- Haunted Town
- Criminal Minds / Bones Vibes
- Sociopathic MMC
- Investigator x Sociopath
- Banter
- Enemies-to-Lovers
- Slow Burn
- Professor x Student vibes

How can a serial killer who is supposed to be the devil be so effing boring? I wish blurbs would stop their lying.

I can't do it anymore. Between the boring as shit pretentiousness of the "love interest" who is a philosophy professor and an apparent serial killer, the lack of chemistry, his lame nickname of "Little Halen" for the grown MC and the fact that I have to apparently read this entire book only to be left hanging with a major cliffhanger (according to reviews) I'm calling it done. This book has used up my last drop of kindness today.

The writing style, the dark atmosphere, the tension and the criminology/philosophy/psychology and of course, Kallum (oh papi chulo) was an intriguing mix.

Not giving it the full 5 star rating because truthfully, I was confused a handful of times - by the end, it kind of gets puzzled together.

I am currently berating myself for not picking this book up when I added it to my TBR FOREVER ago. Thriller romance just scratches an itch in my brain that I didn't know was there until I found it.

This book is if you were to take Hannibal and Clarice from Silence of the Lambs, minus the cannibalism and make Hannibal a younger, hotter, tattooed philosophy professor. Plus, add in insane tension. Our FMC Halen is a forensic psychologist that puts herself in the unsub's head to try and find killers, and guess who she put away for her recent case? You guessed it, Kallum. There's a new killeer on the loose though, and in order to figure out who it is, she needs Kallum's help. The thing is though, he has been obsessed with her since the moment he first laid eyes on her and has plans of his own.

When I say the plot twist in this book shocked me, I can't be more serious about that. I didn't see that coming at ALL. The tension between these two was off the charts.
Kallum is incredibly intelligent. Some of the things he says are WAY above my pay grade, but I can appreciate him nonetheless. Halen has been through a lot and that is partially what drew Kallum to her in the first place. He wants her pain... I'd give him mine in a heartbeat.

I have a TBR for March, and this wasn't on it, but now I HAVE to finish the trilogy. I don't have a choice.

Lovely Bad Things by Trisha Wolfe is a contemporary, enemies-to-lovers dark romance with flavors of “psychological thriller” intertwined into the plot. It’s the first book in Trisha’s “Hollows Row” series (all three books are now released and the trilogy is complete). In this book, you’ll need to pay attention to trigger warnings, especially if topics like the occult, graphic crime scenes, blööd and knîfe play, and viôlence disturb you.

I’m convinced that Trisha Wolfe is in her element when writing romances combined with elements of psychology and philosophy. The inner workings and monologues of her characters minds are so believable, and consequently attaches me further to them. Trisha’s prose is lyrical, methodical and expressive - she truly stands out as a force in the dark romance genre.

Our two protagonists, Kallum and Halen, are quite intriguing to me - particularly Kallum. The chapters with his point-of-view were my favorite, and I particularly enjoyed diving into the psychology professor’s obsessive and brilliant mind. Halen is a character I’m still trying to pin down, but I am confident that I’ll understand her and her motives better in book 2, 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝑽𝒊𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔. I also anticipate to see some character growth in future books and hope that we will see her start to think more “outside of the box.”

🎧 This is the first time that I have “read” a book by simply listening to the audiobook. It is narrated in dual format by Lucy Rivers and Joe Arden. It’s a little different from duet narration because the narrator will do all narration in their chapter. I thought this might be an issue for me, but I actually found the narration still really easy to follow along with. I already knew that I liked Joe’s narration voice, but I was also quite impressed with Lucy! I’ll definitely listen to an audiobook where she narrates again.

I recommend this book to dark romance readers and can’t wait to see what happens next as this book ends on a cliffhanger!

The book confused the heck out of me. The words used felt to be mysterious initially when the chapters started out, then became hollow. Many times, I had to reread as the whole sentence didn't seem to have any meaning. Then I realized most of the book was written to give a feel of depth when it was the most shallow drivel I had ever read.

Read this line out loud - His gravity encapsulates every molecule, dominating the elements with his commanding presence - What did this even mean? Fear not, there were many such lines that gave zero imagery or added anything to the story.

The book spent most of the prose in trying to convince me that he was truly evil, when there were no true actions to show it. Just words.

The chemistry between the main characters started out as a tangible connection, most from his side, until it became forced as if the author was trying hard to make her characters feel the attraction. Being drawn to danger was a concept I was well versed in, but this didn't feel attraction or compulsion. That existed only in the author's mind, not in the written words. A pity.

I was actually shocked as the book ended abruptly, and most subplots didn't make sense and the twists were meh. After reading the author's words, I realized it was a marketing tactic to make it seem the characters were more than they seemed and leave space for the next 2 books.

What a waste of my time and energy. This was a buddy read, so I didn't DNF. A pity.
