Our view

Streets Alive Yarra has previously asked the City of Yarra to acknowledge that on-street parking is subsidised, and council has refused to do so:

If Auckland Council is able to estimate their subsidy of on-street parking, then Yarra City Council can too. Streets Alive Yarra estimates that Yarra’s annual subsidy is on the order of AU$79 million.

It’s time for the City of Yarra to:

  • acknowledge that on-street parking is subsidised;
  • estimate the annual subsidy; and
  • publish the annual subsidy (or revenue foregone) in each annual budget, so that residents and ratepayers understand the magnitude of the opportunity for reform.
