OUR HISTORY

In 1998, the idea for the Ilula Orphan Project was developed in correspondence and conversations between Norwegian-American founder Berit Skaare and her long time Tanzanian Girl Guide friend, Joyce Msolla.

Eventually, IOP was established in 1998 and was legally registered in 2003 by the Registrar of Societies in Tanzania’s Ministry of Home Affairs with the registration number of  SO. NO 12054. On 15th August 2019, the organization was re-registered with the NGOs Registrar under the registration number 00NGO/R2/000374.

IOP’s objective is to give opportunities for excellent education, counseling, and socio-economic development to underrepresented populations in order to remove discrimination and create sustainable communities.

THE BEST LOCAL NGO IN TANZANIA FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN 2022

Ilula Orphan Program (IOP) has a significant impact on the lives of the most vulnerable children and marginalized communities in Tanzania. This led the government of Tanzania to recognize our organization in 2022 with a distinguished certificate of recognition for being Tanzania’s best local NGO for sustainability. Receiving the certificate of recognition as the best local NGO in Tanzania for sustainability in 2022 is a well-deserved honor for the Ilula Orphan Program. Our tireless efforts have not only transformed the lives of countless children and families but have also set a remarkable example for NGOs both within Tanzania and globally. Our success in being named the best local NGO in Tanzania for sustainability in 2022 is a reflection of hope and a strong example of what can be achieved when an organization is passionately dedicated to making a difference. Additionally, we are not only changing lives today but also paving the way for a more sustainable, prosperous future for the community we serve through our creative initiatives and unshakable commitment to self-sufficiency. The impact of IOP’s sustainability initiatives extends far beyond the organization itself. By promoting self-reliance and sustainability at the grassroots level, we are contributing to the overall development of the community.

IOP'S EDUCATION INSTITUIONS

KIDS CORNER PRE SCHOOL

Kids’ Corner Pre-school was founded in 2003 with the intention of giving children a high quality early childhood education, between the ages of two and five. The pre-school has established a solid reputation for excellence and has grown to be a dependable institution in the neighborhood. Since opening, Kids Corner Pre-school has steadily increased the number of children enrolled, whereby 623 pupils have completed their childhood education program. Currently, Kids Corner Pre-school has 6 teachers and 80 pupils. The number of classroom space that is available has been severely strained by this development, resulting in over-crowded classrooms.

OUR LIBRAY

We believe a library is more than just a collection of books; it’s an abundant resource of knowledge, a source of inspiration, and a place for curious minds. Our library is intended to inspire a lifetime love of reading and learning. It is open to the community at a yearly subscription of 12,000 Tsh and 6,000 Tshs for adults and children respectively.

Ilula Orphan Center (IOC)

Ilula Orphan Center (IOC) provides a safe, loving and nurturing environment for both orphaned girls and boys aged 2-17 years, supported by committed staff and volunteers. The center promotes education, life skills training and community engagement. The children get all basic necessities of life including treatment, food, clothing, shelter and education. The center needs additional funds to pay salaries and wages of caregivers and for paying property insurance, water, electricity and travels.

ILULA TIGERS SPORTS CLUB (ITSC)

The club was registered by the National Sports Council of Tanzania in 2014. The Club has been holding annual sports tournament for kids, teens, and adults in May and June in connection with African Child Day to commemorate the Sharpeville massacre which occurred on 21 March 1960. The club’s primary goal is identification and development of sports talents among youths. In order to foster an atmosphere where children and youth can realize their sports potential, ITSC plans to establish connections with important partners in youth sports globally.
