About us
The Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering is a private, nonprofit, public-service institution patterned after the National Academy of Sciences. The Academy identifies and studies issues and technological advances that are or should be of concern to the people of Connecticut, and provides unbiased, expert advice on science- and technology-related issues to the state government and other Connecticut institutions. It is comprised of distinguished scientists and engineers from Connecticut's academic, industrial, and institutional communities. One of the principal purposes of the Academy is to provide science and technology information and advice, usually by performing studies, on public policy issues upon request of a government agency, the General Assembly, or in some instances, private organizations. These studies result in formal Reports published by the Academy. Summaries of recent studies conducted by the Academy are available on our website. The Academy also issues a quarterly publication called the Bulletin, which features articles on new developments in science and technology around the state. It is distributed free to members, government officials, college and high school science departments, and research libraries at the state's major private research facilities, as well as other interested individuals, upon request. Other Academy activities include participation in technology expositions, the award of monetary prizes to student winners of science competitions, such as the CT Science Fair, the Junior Sciences and Humanities Symposium, the CT Intel Science Talent Search, and the Invention Convention, and also the award of the Connecticut Medal of Science and the Connecticut Medal of Technology.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s agricultural and youth education program, supported by UConn Extension encompasses three primary goals: agricultural production, cultural heritage, and nutrition. Developed with assistance from the USDA’s Federally Recognized Tribes Extension Program, the initiative began when Tribal members sought Extension’s expertise to enhance their agricultural practices. “This partnership is a model for how education can drive meaningful change—benefiting communities while preserving cultural heritage,” said Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering Member Indrajeet Chaubey, dean of the UConn College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources. https://lnkd.in/eBEq4fNk #nutrition #agricuture #culture #tribal #youth #education #science #STEM

Planes are equipped with black boxes that collect and measure operational data for all flights. Did you know your car has one, too? The Connecticut Transportation Institute- UConn is collaborating with the Connecticut Department of Transportation, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to read the black boxes in cars and provide researchers with information about what the vehicle was doing up to five seconds before a crash. By combining this with traditional accident analysis, such as measuring skid marks and conducting accident reconstruction, investigators are better equipped to piece together the details. https://lnkd.in/eN9dX8YA #transportation #automobiles #cars #technology

Experiments aboard the International Space Station may lead to promising advancements in the fight against cancer. The extremely low gravity facilitates the growth of molecules in shapes and uniformity that are difficult to achieve on Earth. Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering Member Yupeng Chen, associate professor of engineering at the University of Connecticut, has been cultivating an unusually rod-shaped nanoparticle known as a Janus base nanotube in space. With a $1.9M award from the Center for Advancement of Science in Space and NASA’s Division of Biological and Physical Sciences, Chen and his colleagues will utilize the unique environment of the space station to develop pharmaceuticals whose shape is their secret weapon. https://lnkd.in/g_F7qeRG #pharmaceuticals #cancer #molecules #engineer #bioengineering #nanoparticles #InternationalSpaceStation
