Membership Information

Join Swindon Library & Information Service

Anyone who lives, works or studies in the Borough of Swindon can join.

You will get a membership card and a PIN, which you can use to borrow our books for free for up to 3 weeks. For a small charge you can reserve books from our catalogue to be collected from your nearest branch. Books can be returned to any Swindon Library. 

Members have free access to:

  • Our range of eBooks, eAudiobooks, eBooks, eMagazines, and eNewspapers.
  • Our collection of eResources – a range of premium websites.
  • Public Computers (2 hours free a day)
  • Free library Wi-Fi

 

Borrowing Books

Children, young people and adults may borrow up to 16 books at a time, and unless another reader is waiting, you can renew books up to 4 times. You can renew online, by phone, or by with our self-service terminals.

As a member you can login at https://swindon.spydus.co.uk to change your PIN, update your email address, renew your loans, place reservations and review your address details. You can also set up alerts, amend your marketing preferences and create book lists.

We do not use postal notifications. Instead, we send emails to help you manage your account (or accounts for which you are a guarantor). These are pre-overdue emails, overdue notifications, reservation notifications and password reset emails. Sometimes library staff may need email you directly about your account (or accounts for which you are a guarantor). We do not charge children aged 0-4 for the late return of books or for accidental damage to children’s books.

Many of our services are free to members, but there are charges for the following:

  • Late returns or late renewals
  • Reservation placement
  • Printing and photocopying
  • Hire of CD audiobooks and language packs
  • Lost or damaged items
  • Requests for books not held in our stock (Inter-Library Loans)
  • Replacement membership cards
  • Non-members must pay for computer use.

For those who reserve lots of books we offer an annual SuperReserver subscription which allows unlimited reservations. We also offer a miniReserver (90 days subscription). Speak to staff for details and prices.

Your library membership expires every 2 years. We will send you an email before this happens and you will see an alert when you log in. You can renew your membership at any of our libraries. If you move and need to update your address, bring your membership card and proof of your new address to the desk in one of our libraries during open hours.

 

Types of Membership

We offer membership to visitors, those with no fixed residence, registered childminders, foster carers, and home educators.

We also offer membership concessions for those with mobility or visual impairments or memory loss.
