We're working with partners to transform the lives of children and adolescents in developing countries

About us

The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) is an independent philanthropic organisation, with offices in Addis Ababa, Beijing, London, Nairobi and New Delhi. CIFF works with a wide range of partners seeking to transform and empower the lives of children in developing countries, with the ultimate goal of solving seemingly intractable challenges to ensure all children have the chance to survive and thrive. CIFF aims to play a catalytic role as a funder and influencer to deliver urgent and systemic change at scale. Areas of work include empowering adolescents to control their sexual and reproductive health and to avoid unwanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS; improving children and mothers’ health and nutrition and increasing deworming efforts to break transmission for good; and seeking an equitable world for girls and young women. CIFF’s climate portfolio is driven by a vision of a climate-safe future for today’s children and future generations that also bears the benefits of cleaner air, energy security and sustainable jobs. CIFF’s child protection work focuses on ending child labour and sexual exploitation by enabling an environment that reduces vulnerability of communities and safeguards children. The Foundation places significant emphasis on quality data and evidence. For most of its grants, CIFF works with partners to measure and evaluate progress to achieve large-scale and sustainable impact. The organisation is committed to sharing as much information as possible about what they and their partners are learning. Founded in 2002, CIFF employs over 130 professionals in China, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, and the UK. CIFF strives to couple business acumen and principles with development experience and best practices to transform the landscape for children. It seeks to be the gold standard in grant making and foundation operations. For more information please visit www.ciff.org

  • Earlier this month, CIFF colleagues attended the Skoll World Forum and the partner Marmalade Festival in Oxford, England. This was a crucial opportunity to listen from partners, forge relationships and reflect on the unique responsibility that philanthropy has right now to accelerate momentum for the development sector during challenging times.   As put by CIFF's CEO Kate Hampton during her Skoll panel, we need funders to lean in to new partnerships and to learn from countries and partners who already show examples of effective progress.   Our CIFF representatives had the opportunity to meet partners across all the issues we work on, from climate, health and nutrition, to education, opportunities and choice for women and girls. Topics varied from: 1. The importance of development initiatives being locally owned from a sustainability and resilience perspective.  2. The urgency of scaling evidence-based nutrition work to meet the need and increase the impact of proven solutions. 3. The question of longer term grant making to better tackle the challenges we are facing. Thank you to all the partners and attendees as well as Skoll and Marmalade hosts for enabling such important and necessary conversations. As Kate mentioned in her panel event, we must continue coming together, sharing ideas, and championing each others work in support of global progress.   Sonia Medina ED for Climate and CEDO, Anna Hakobyan ED for Nutrition and Linda Weisert Global Director for Equity Gender and Youth.

  • On #WorldHealthDay2025, Dr. Hemang Shah, CIFF's Director of Child Health & Development for India, joined a Confederation of Indian Industry podcast to highlight the significant progress India has made in improving maternal and child health outcomes. Aligned with this year's #WorldHealthDay2025 theme, 'Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,' Dr Shah discussed how we can co-create inclusive and sustainable healthcare models that empower communities, ensuring every mother and newborn receives the care they deserve. He emphasised the private sector and philanthropy's role in supporting government policies to strengthen the quality of primary healthcare—through innovative solutions such as point-of-care diagnostics and digital tools, outcome-based financing models, and CSR activities to improve service delivery in India. Dr Shah also spoke about the need to invest in community-based engagement models to bring about large-scale behavioural change. • This week, CIFF is excited to be co-convening the AfricaXchange in partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation in Nairobi, Kenya. We know that the most powerful way to accelerate sustainable development is through locally-led philanthropy that champions partners and empowers the wider ecosystem. We are excited to be apart of conversations and listen to experiences from local implementers and other partners and funders in order to drive meaningful progress. #AfricaXchangeLLD | #LeadLocal | #AfricanDevelopment | Faustina Fynn-Nyame

    Executive Director, Africa

I am excited that CIFF is co-hosting #AfricaXchange next week in Nairobi, in partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. This gathering aims to elevate African voices, champion locally-led philanthropy (LLD), and foster an empowering ecosystem that equips local actors with the resources and influence they rightfully deserve. The event will feature our incredible grantees—including Food4Education, SHOFCO, END Fund, CAMFED, Job Tech Alliance, Speak Up Africa, ONE, the Africa Capital Hub (ACH), and the Africa Social Impact Exchange (ASIEx)—who will showcase LLD at scale, shape investable opportunities, and highlight pathways for mobilizing sustainable local financing mechanisms and ecosystem-building approaches. It's energising to see high-profile African and global leaders, funders, implementing organizations, and policymakers unite to drive tangible action for change. I'm looking forward to the conversations, connections, and collaborations that will shape the future of philanthropy and make a real impact across the continent. #AfricaXchangeLLD #AfricanDevelopment  #LeadLocal Food4Education SHOFCO The END Fund CAMFED - Campaign for Female Education Jobtech Alliance The ONE Campaign

True progress in African development comes from genuine partnership and a willingness to listen and learn together. That's why we're co-convening the #AfricaXchange in Nairobi alongside The Rockefeller Foundation, and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. We recognise the complex geopolitical environment facing Africa today. But, as the powerful voices at AfricaXchange are demonstrating, resilience and agency are inherent within the continent. This is our moment to move beyond traditional dialogues and into action. We're committed to fostering a space where funders, implementers, and the private sector can collaboratively forge innovative solutions. This isn't just about navigating challenges; it's about seizing control of our collective future. We're listening intently to our partners, learning from their experiences, and collaborating with them to develop sustainable, locally led solutions. This is about empowering African leaders to shape their narratives and drive lasting impact. Join us in this pivotal conversation. Let's learn, listen, and act together to create a brighter future for Africa's children and beyond. #AfricaXchangeLLD #LeadLocal #AfricanDevelopment | Faustina Fynn-Nyame | William Asiko https://lnkd.in/d2ZrFDRX

  • Investment in global health is a smart, high-impact, jobs-rich investment in stable, equitable and prosperous societies. That’s why we’ve been a committed partner to The Global Fund since 2015. We don’t do this to replace governments. We do it in our role as a flexible philanthropic partner, injecting resources to support innovation and to play a catalytic role towards sustainable domestically financed life-saving services.   We firmly believe that now is the time to double down on the progress we’ve made – which is why we’re pledging a further $150 million in support of the Global Fund’s 8th replenishment. https://lnkd.in/e2pSUNGW

Last week, Anna Hakobyan, our Executive Director For Nutrition and Chief Impact Officer announced our intention to commit at least $400 million to nutrition by the end of 2028. In this video you can hear the perspective of our founder, Sir Chris Hohn and our leadership on both 𝘄𝗵𝘆 and 𝗵𝗼𝘄 we do this work.   With this commitment, we will continue to support catalytic initiatives such as the Child Nutrition Fund and End School Age Hunger Fund. Both of these initiatives rely on deep partnership with governments, helping embed nutrition within wider health systems and accelerating their development priorities. Through our work with partners, we aim to strengthen the policy and financing architecture to help end malnutrition globally. • We are pleased to announce that CIFF intends to commit at least $400 million by the end of 2028 to scale up high-impact evidence-based nutrition interventions across the lifecycle, including for adolescents, pregnant women, and children.     This includes CIFF's commitments towards joint-initiatives like the Child Nutrition Fund, End School Age Hunger Fund, and other efforts to catalyse the nutrition ecosystem through strong financing and policy mechanisms.    Announced by our Executive Director for Nutrition, Anna Hakobyan, during the Nutrition for Growth Summit in Paris – we have reaffirmed our commitment to ending global malnutrition alongside partners, to help children, communities, countries and the world grow and thrive. #N4GParis #Nutrition4Growth Paris Peace Forum

  • We're part of the Multiple Micronutrient Supplement (MMS) Challenge commitment alongside the Eleanor Crook Foundation and Kirk Humanitarian. MMS are a key piece of the puzzle🧩 when it comes to catalysing an intergenerational cycle of strong nutrition. So we want to help bring proven interventions, like MMS, to scale.
