WELCOME TO OUR INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION WEEK

Dear colleagues,

We are very happy to invite all of you to this year's International Cooperation Week which will take place virtually from Monday 5th - Wednesday 7th September.

There will be:

2 compulsory main sessions taking place at 2 - 2:45 pm and 3 - 3:45 pm every day (Berlin time) and

1 side session taking place at 11 - 12 noon and repeated at 4 - 5 pm (Wed 4:30 - 5:30 pm) every day (Berlin time).

In each side session you will be able to choose between 4 different workshops / topics - each running concurrently.

When you register for the ICW event please don't forget to select one of the workshops / topics for each of the side sessions Monday - Wednesday. Please make your selection by Wednesday 24 August 12 noon at the latest. Your attendance for the main sessions will be set up automatically.

Your access code allows you to access this website throughout the whole event, so please keep it safe.

All sessions - and their respective passwords for the Zoom meetings - are listed separately on the different tabs (at the top of this page). Additional information about the respective workshops / topics will be available once you have entered your access code. All respective links and passwords for the Zoom meetings will be added shortly before the start of ICW.

Choosing the right browser
You will need an up-to-date browser to follow the sessions. Google Chrome, Edge or Firefox usually work fine. All sessions will use Zoom which is integrated into our event platform and usually does not need any installations on your computer. Please make sure to accept your browser's access to your microphone and webcam.

The main sessions, Monday - Wednesday 2:00 - 3:45 pm, are mandatory and your participation will be set up automatically.

The side sessions take place every day at 11 - 12 noon and are repeated at 4 - 5 pm, to allow you to select workshops / topics at hours more suited to your time zone. The side sessions each offer a choice of four workshops / topics running concurrently.

Topic 1: Geoinformation and GIS within GRC and our Sister National Societies:

The importance of spatial information

Hosts: Isabell Klipper and Karen Dall

Short description of the session

This session aims at sensitising and showcasing the value of GIS in the RCRC working and humanitarian assistance context. We will explore how spatial information can influence our decision making. For this, participants will work in groups on a historic scenario and hence actively experience the benefits of GIS. With use cases from colleagues, we aim to show how GIS can support GRC projects. Spoiler: Geoinformation and maps not only help for visualization and communication between stakeholders, but for getting overall knowledge and new insights of the given situation. The session will serve as an entry point to the topic of GIS and will show how and where to connect and to continue to integrate the usage within our daily work – GIS is for everyone!

Topic 2: Launching GRC’s MEAL Framework: Standards, processes and tools to strengthen evidence-based decision-making, learn from experience and ensure we do the right thing for the right people at the right time in the right way.

Short description of the session

Over the last year, the newly established MEAL Technical Cluster has worked on revising and updating the M&E Framework for GRC’s International Cooperation from 2015. The goal was to emphasise our strategic commitment to quality, make the aspects of accountability to affected populations (AAP/CEA) and learning more explicit and expand on the practical guidance based on the experience of the last 2-3 years. Overall the MEAL Framework aims to provided a solid basis to strengthen evidence-based decision making, learn from experience and ensure we do the right thing for the right people at the right time in the right way. In order to familiarise GRC International Cooperation staff with the content of the MEAL Framework and identify possible ways of engagement with the standards, processes and tools, colleagues at both, HQ and in GRC country delegations are invited to participate in the session.

Topic 3: How to engage with HNS on topic of NSD 

Host: Regina Schäfer-Radojicic

Short description of the session

Within the GRC strategic approach, cooperation with Sister NSs is of very high importance, as the HNS in its national context plays a crucial role in the provision of humanitarian assistance to people in need. While some of our Sister NSs are rather strong organisations, there are others who struggle with the many required standards, are challenged by their own organisational structures and processes, or face many new developments of new approaches and tools in delivering humanitarian assistance. GRC has contributed already in the past to capacity building and organisational development activities of HNSs, in the spirit of the NSD Framework we aim to strengthen this support to our Sister NSs further, by better understanding the concept of NSD Framework, our individual role in this process and above all to learn from our experience.

Topic 4: The urban strategy of the RCRC Movement and the Role of German Red Cross – Implementing the CoD Resolutions

Topic 5: International Humanitarian Law & Health Care in Danger 

Hosts: Franziska Kellerhaus, Jasmin Oschkinat and Hanna Kaade

Short description of the session 

During the proposed session, Jasmin -  a legal advisor at GRC - will provide an introduction to IHL and the role of GRC with regards to IHL in Germany. This includes the cooperation with the German army and the dissemination activities in the GRC branches. Hanna – a doctor from Syria, former SARC volunteer, and GRC consultant – will provide an introduction into the Health Care in Danger initiative, some practical examples, and into his work on behalf of GRC together with the ICRC. (Current) examples and challenges in the application of IHL and the protection of health care staff and facilities will be discussed.

Topic 6: Nexus continued: towards more effective humanitarian action

Morning session: Learning from CHA research on triple nexus – country examples PAK and SSD and processes of other organizations

Afternoon session: Learning from other German organizations - Insight into Chapeau projects and practical experiences of German organisations

Short description of the sessions

Follow-up on last year’s discussion around the triple nexus (ICW 2021) and learn from external partners, their research and experience. Based on the learnings out of this session, the aim is to resume GRC internal discussions around the institutional and country-specific way forward around the double and triple nexus.

We will have two different sessions: The morning session will be focused on the CHA experience of their Nexus research, evaluations and work with other German organizations. The afternoon session will be focused on the practical experience of the implementation of the Chapeau-approach by two German humanitarian partner organizations of the GFFO. These inputs will build the foundation for GRC internal discussion and reflection from a 1) country perspective and 2) an institutional perspective. Concrete session output will be a 1p document to give an overview of GRC discussions to date and intended next steps.

Topic 7: Linking eVCAs to anticipatory action and response preparedness

Short description of the session

The enhanced vulnerability and capacity assessment (EVCA) is the most important multi-sectoral and community-based assessment tool within the RCRC movement to collect data and make it easily accessible and usable. The enhancement process (from classical VCA to eVCA) made the tool even more important to inform our work. Much of the information collected with eVCAs, but also the processes set up for data gathering can inform our work not only in longer-term risk reduction, but also in anticipatory action and response preparedness. This session aims to explore how these linkages can be used best, using the cases of different National Societies working on anticipatory action and having started or being about to start with eVCA.

The humanitarian landscape is faced with a multitude of challenges and growing needs due to different crises, at the same time, donors embark on new strategies to respond to the changing landscape. Topic 11: COVID-19 update and potential scenarios for coming months

Short description of the session

The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing and the coming winter months in the northern hemisphere have the potential for a more serious turn of the pandemic (new virus variants, more indoor spread, etc.). GRC needs to be cognisant of this fact and ready to react both programmatically and in terms of staff safety and well-being (travel restrictions, quarantine, etc.). This session wants to present an update of the current situation and discuss reactions (in terms of staff health/well-being, not programmatic) of GRC HQ and delegations to potential developments. Input will be used to define a GRC staff health & well-being response for the following months.

Topic 12: GRC goes Matrix: A glimpse into the OneDRK Project featuring our new software system Microsoft Dynamics 365

Short description of the session

In 2023 GRC will switch towards Microsoft Dynamics 365 as its new main software (ERP) System.This opens the door to new ways of working and cooperation, especially between HQ and the field. All delegates will be connected to the new system, information will be stored in one cloud-based solution, instead of currently two systems (SAP & FundsPro) and a project management component will be introduced to plan, track and report financial and non-financial aspects of a project. Participants will be informed about the main parts of the system and Division 6-specific functions, e.g. the replacement for FundsPro. This is not a technical training or introduction. The new system is still under development and configuration and functions are not ready yet to be presented.
