Historical drought in the Amazon in 2023

The landscape of the Solimões River changed completely last year. The place where boats and canoes used to circulate turned into a sandy desert in December last year. The transformation of the Amazon river, near the Porto Praia indigenous community, is a consequence of the historic drought faced by the Amazon in 2023. Data from MapBiomas Água shows that, in one year, the biome lost 3.3 million hectares of surface water. Lack of rain and excessive warming are among the reasons given by experts. Riverine and indigenous communities are the most affected by the drought in the Amazon.
