Today, we are celebrating #Lithuania's 🇱🇹 20-year membership in the European Union 🇪🇺. Best wishes and greetings from us all here at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU! 👋 In these two decades of success, we have changed beyond recognition, we have matured as a free and responsible country, a full and dignified member of the Western democratic 🌐 world. We are facing crises and challenges, but we are strong and capable of overcoming them - by taking our own decisions and leaning on the shoulder of our #European family. The principles of democracy, human rights and the rule of law that unite the #EU make it possible to ensure security and prosperity, for the talents of our people to flourish, for each of us to freely choose our own future, and for us to build together an innovative and prosperous #Europe. A recent #Eurobarometer survey affirms ☑️ our optimism, with 78% of us optimistic about the EU’s future, and 91% recognizing the profound benefits we’ve enjoyed. #20YearsTogether | 💬 "Lithuania is not yet and probably never will be perfect, but perhaps most of the world's nations would have something to be happy about if they only dealt with the problems we deal with in our daily lives. I believe that before the curtain of uncertainty, at the dawn of independence, we would not have hesitated to choose what we have achieved and what we have now, which is why the motto of this commemorative year is justified: 20 years of success," said the Prime Minister of #Lithuania 🇱🇹 Ingrida Šimonytė. The upcoming 20th anniversary of Lithuania's accession to the European Union 🇪🇺 was celebrated in a grand ceremony at Government House, attended by former heads of state, government and parliament, diplomats and other guests who contributed to Lithuania's accession ☑️ to the EU and who prepared the country for membership. In her welcoming remarks, Prime Minister noted that Lithuania's independence was restored on 11 March, and its promise of a successful democratic Lithuania could only be fulfilled thanks to Lithuania's membership of the #EU and #NATO. Twenty years ago, our European family grew 🇪🇺🎉    On 1 May 2004, citizens of 🇨🇾 Cyprus, 🇨🇿 Czech Republic, 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇱🇻 Latvia, 🇱🇹 Lithuania, 🇲🇹 Malta, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇸🇰 Slovakia, 🇸🇮 Slovenia became EU citizens.     Since then, two more enlargements have taken place, solidifying our European unity.    The EU is now the world's largest integrated market, boosting trade and economic growth for its countries, while also offering citizens rights and opportunities aligned with shared European values.    Enlargement is a success story.   The EU is stronger today because of the inclusion of new countries, and each country is better off thanks to EU membership.   Discover how we delivered on the promise we made 20 years ago 👉 https://lnkd.in/erTej4Mf #20YearsTogether #EuropeanUnion
