Another great episode of the Tax Justice Network's #Taxcast — this time featuring, among other things, insights on “The Chinese Phantom.” Investigative journalist and #PanamaPapers co-author Frederik Obermaier shares the story of how he and his colleagues pursued one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives: Chinese arms dealer Li Fang Wei (also known as Karl Lee). Their years-long investigation led not only to a gripping book, but also to revealing insights, including: -> There is still far too much secrecy — and not enough pressure /sanctions on enablers (like lawyers, bankers, and accountants). -> With the U.S. no longer a reliable partner in the fight for financial transparency, the EU should take the lead — for example, by creating public Ultimate Beneficial Ownership (#UBO) registers. -> Ideally, UBO registers should be available across all jurisdictions and to the public. ->Fun fact: China turned out to be more transparent than Germany. Its public company register includes national ID numbers, helping identify shareholders and executives — sometimes even including private phone numbers. Court documents such as indictments and bribery verdicts are also publicly accessible... ...this and more in a fascinating episode — made me want to read the book and looking forward to the next one. Thank you Naomi Fowler! PS: Buchtitel ist "Die Jagd auf das chinesische Phantom" (Argon Verlag) #TaxJustice #FinancialTransparency #IllicitFinancialFlows #UBO #AntiCorruption #InvestigativeJournalism #China #MoneyLaundering #PublicRegisters #EUTransparency #KarlLee #FBI #TaxHavens
The Tax Justice Network podcast: How easy is it to get filthy rich selling arms to anyone who will pay? No better people to chase down the FBI’s most wanted fugitive, an arms dealer and manufacturer who's evaded arrest for two decades than Panama Papers journalists, Frederik Obermaier and Bastian Obermayer. They teamed up with Philipp Grüll and Christoph Giesen to write the book The Chinese Phantom, the Hunt for the World’s Most Dangerous Arms Dealer. Co-produced with Leo Schick, it tells us a lot about sanctions and financial secrecy at a time of rising autocracy and global insecurity (The Taxcast is available wherever you get your podcasts)

"Tax is our social superpower, and the source of this power lies in the collective. It gains strength when movements connect, when knowledge is shared across sectors and when we take the time to understand each other's ways of working." 🔗Our Carolina Rodrigues Finette's guest blog in Critical Takes on Corporate Power https://lnkd.in/eZDXnatB
