We are excited to highlight our partners at Wieden + Kennedy as we begin our second year of collaboration in carbon removal. Beyond these two years of removing emissions associated with their operations, Wieden + Kennedy has also embarked on a program to take responsibility for their commercial production emissions. Through this program, they purchase carbon on a rolling basis, having already removed 280tCO2e of shoot emissions in the first quarter of 2024. The science is clear—all viable climate models show that carbon removal will be necessary to achieve the targets set by the Paris Agreement. However, not all offsets are created equal. Finding reliable and impactful carbon credits can’t be taken for granted, as Katja Grothe-Eberhardt explains. Klimate offers companies the tools and access to confidently invest in high-integrity carbon credits that actively remove carbon from the atmosphere. These range from forestation projects that offer major social and environmental co-benefits, to highly permanent solutions like storing bio-oil deep underground. We are excited to announce a new supplier Klim! Klim is a German AgriTech company who aims to create a joint movement with farmers, businesses, and consumers to scale regenerative agriculture and remove carbon. Alongside this, Klim’s project works to improve soil health and biodiversity, as well as enable the transition for farmers to be more sustainable, profitable, and recognised stewards of the soil. To put farmers at the forefront and help reach these goals, they have developed a platform to aid farmers’ transition. 📎 With a lot of attention around climate claims (like the EU Green Claims Act and more) it is important to understand the differences and make an informed decision for your sustainability strategy. Both ‘carbon neutral’ and ‘net zero’ are related concepts about balancing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere with the amount removed. But, there are some nuanced differences between the two. 🔍 Where does carbon removal fit into these claims? Consider these takeaways from supranational frameworks like SBTi: 1️⃣ Whether you are striving for a carbon neutral or net zero target, high-quality carbon removal is a credible choice to tackle residual emissions. 2️⃣ The use of high-quality carbon removal at the same time as reductions is the key to meeting our climate goals. Charm Industrial and Klimate.co continue partnership with $1.1M Agreement We are happy to highlight our ongoing partnership with Charm Industrial through another agreement, a San Francisco-based company leading the way in carbon removal innovation. Charm specialises in converting excess unused biomass into fast pyrolysis bio-oil. This bio-oil is then injected deep underground into depleted oil wells, where it remains stored for millennia. Charm’s unique approach combines natural processes with engineered solutions, resulting in highly scalable carbon removal and storage. 🌍 SEC's New Climate Disclosure Rules vs. EU's CSRD: A Comparison 🌍 On March 6, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the nation's first national climate disclosure rules. These are effectively a counterpart to the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) across the pond, but with some substantial differences: 1️⃣ Scope of Emissions Covered Despite two years of negotiations, the final SEC rules are notably weaker than the original proposal, and do not include Scope 3 emissions (which can account for up to 90% of a company’s emissions profile) in the reporting requirements. The CSRD does require companies to report on their Scope 3 emissions alongside Scope 1 & 2. 2️⃣ Materiality of Risk While the SEC focuses primarily on financial materiality, the EU's CSRD embraces a double materiality approach, considering both financial and non-financial impacts. 3️⃣ Different Reporting Timelines The SEC's reporting timeline is somewhat delayed in comparison to the CSRD’s, with its requirements being implemented over several years starting in 2025. Meanwhile the CSRD's impacts are expected sooner; large public-interest companies will have to report on their 2024 emissions. While the SEC’s rules are limited, there's potential for a stricter global standard based on the CSRD as many companies affected operate internationally. EU regulations hold significant sway over multinational companies and supply chains, especially regarding Scope 3 emissions. As regulatory landscapes evolve, prioritising transparent reporting is essential for effectively addressing climate risks.
