Mirage

 featuring Larry Bell, Ben Dallas,
August Muth, Signe Stuart

May 25 - June 22, 2024

Opening Reception | Saturday, May 25, 4-6 pm

Pie Projects is thrilled to present Mirage,’ a group exhibition featuring Larry Bell, Ben Dallas, August Muth, and Signe Stuart. The artworks exhibited in 'Mirage' put in question what one sees. Visual perception change on closer inspection, challenging our preconceived ideas of materials and optical sensations.

Larry Bell takes center stage with three recent compositions on canvas from his 'Mirage' series and nine small works on paper from his 'Fractions' series.
Using the vacuum coating technology used to deposit the thin films on his iconic glass works, Bell intuitively creates mixed media fused collages as mysterious as memories of dreams.

Larry Bell, DS 6.6.23B, 2023 mixed media on canvas, 62 x 42 in.

Larry Bell is one of the most renowned and influential artists to emerge from the Los Angeles art scene of the 1960s, alongside contemporaries Ed Ruscha and Robert Irwin. Larry Bell: Improvisations', a career survey from the 1960s onward, opens 22 May 2024 art at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Ben Dallas, Pretense to Culture While Shopping Online, 2024,
acrylic media, canvas, glue, 4.25 x 4.25 x 3 in.

Ben Dallas will present a selection of his new painting constructions. The mysterious design and the three-dimensionality of his works invite the viewer to spend time with the pieces, looking for marks, chromatic shifts, delicate lines, wax layers, and unexpected folds. Dallas’ work can seem hermetic, but a closer look reveals exquisite and poetic compositions.

August Muth, Flux, 2015, holograms laminated in glass,
15 x 11 in. optical depth 11 in.

The exhibition also includes holographic etchings from August Muth. A pioneer in the exploration of light and color through holography, Muth produces rich fields of color which stretch beyond the bounds of the archival glass surface moving in space with the viewer. He will be presenting a series of new holographic works at Pie Projects in a two-person exhibition later this summer.

Signe Stuart,
In the Beginning, 2024, acrylic on sewn canvas, 70 x 30 in.

Signe Stuart is back in the studio after her 60-year retrospective at the South Dakota Art Museum. Her new sewn canvases blur the liminal perception between line, color, light, and shadow. For Stuart, a sewn canvas is a metaphorical slice of time and space, a context in which to construct ideas about the connections and intersections of matter and energy.

Gay Block, Untitled (Miami South Beach), archival pigment print, 16 x 20 in.

About Love presents a selection of fine art portrait photographs by Gay Block (b. 1942.) For some 50 years, Block has captured the identities of the people she’s encountered, from elderly residents of the Art Deco hotels in Miami Beach, to the Christians who saved Jews during the Holocaust, to summer camp girls.

”Through photography, I have learned about love. I hadn’t learned about love at home or in school. Photography formed and shaped me. I couldn’t have learned about love without photography, and I’m still learning.” - Gay Block

Gay Block's work has been published in books, and is collected by the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the El Paso Museum of Art, and the New Mexico Museum of Art, among others.
