Amin Nasser, chief executive of the world’s largest oil company Saudi Aramco, recently called on nations to “abandon the fantasy” to phase out fossil fuels, adding that the transition to renewable energy sources is “visibly failing”. However, the latest science on climate change is unequivocal: the world must eliminate fossil fuel-based energy systems – and fast. New #OpenAccess article alert Panagiotis Fragkos Lauri Peterson Kostas Fragkiadakis & I look at the environmental and economic effects of different international fossil fuel supply-side coalitions, combining insights from political science with modelling. Our findings confirm the need to "cut with both arms of the scissors" and point to scope and coverage, size of the coalition, and incentives for participation as key design elements for an international supply-side coalition. https://lnkd.in/esv28fYA

How can global #climate governance promote #energyefficiency in #buildings? New article by me, Chun Xia and Stefan Thomas from our NDC ASPECTS project lead by Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy Despite the local characteristics of the sector, global governance has a number of levers at its disposal to promote decarbonisation of buildings. In practice, lacking attention to energy efficiency in buildings at national level has until recently been mirrored at the international level. Recently, though, coalitions demanding stronger action have emerged. Such frontrunners could work through like-minded coalitions and in parallel try to engender stronger cooperation in broader institutions such as the UN climate regime. Key items for cooperation are, sending strong signals on the need to act, co-ordinating efficiency standards and other policies, transparency and accountability, and overcoming the capacity constraints of developing countries. https://lnkd.in/ed2dQzvc
