Hannah is a primary school teacher and she explains what her typical day at work is like. 'Get My Job' is a series that explores the day in the life of different professions around Australia.

A 9 to 5 job

In the video, Hannah says:

It's definitely not a 9 to 3 job.

This is because in Australia, school starts at 9am and ends around 3pm. What she means is that even though those are the hours the school is open, they are not her working hours. She does more than that.

It's more common to say:

It's definitely not a 9 to 5 job.

That usually refers to a normal working day where you start at 9 and end at 5 without working extra hours.

A 9 to 5 job can also refer to a deskbound job in an office.

Many 9 to 5 jobs are disappearing these days as working from home becomes more common.

Words to describe how you feel about your job

'Enthusiasm', 'energy' and 'passion' are good words to use to talk about what one needs in a job.

'Enthusiastic', 'energetic' and 'passionate' are the adjective forms that can be useful as well.

If you want to be great at what you do, you need to be enthusiastic about learning on the job as well.

Some jobs are demanding so you need to have lots of energy.

If you want to go far in your career, you need to have a passion for learning new skills.

Work placement

A work placement is a job that's part of a course of study and related to it. In a work placement, you gain practical experience.

For example, if you're studying to become a teacher, you might do a work placement in a school.

If you want to see if teaching is something you'll love, make sure you do a work placement.

Local area

One's local area can refer to the areas around where they live.

Getting involved in your local area is really important.

'Get My Job' is produced by ABC ME Productions.
