The More People Learn, The More They Oppose Ocean Wind Turbines. Even In Cadiz, Spain!

Above:  Posters from Cadiz, Spain showing drawings of proposed 200 meter (656 foot) wind turbines.  They also show proposed locations for 17 of them in the ocean just outside the city’s harbor.  The words say “Not in the Bay!  Not in Cadiz!”

This project is nothing compared to what is planned for New Jersey.  Democratic President Biden and NJ Governor Murphy already gave Danish corporation Orsted permits to build 300 of these giant wind turbines off the beaches of South Jersey.  Murphy’s NJ Board of Public Utilities also approved automatic rate increases to guarantee that the project is profitable, even if the wind turbines fail to deliver.  The Wall Street Bank of Goldman Sachs is one of the largest investors in this project.  Governor Murphy made his fortune as an executive of Goldman Sachs while in the former Communist country of East Germany.  Goldman Sachs and Murphy made enormous profits selling government owned factories and businesses to private investors.

Some 98 wind turbines will be built off the beaches of Ocean City.  Another 100 will be built off of Brigantine.  Another 100 will be built off the beaches of Long Beach Island.  Others will be built further north.

Citizens in Cadiz oppose these giant ocean wind turbines for many of the same reasons we do. They industrialize the recreational coastline.  They are a danger to fishing and boat and ship traffic.  Sonar testing to build them disturbs and kills marine wildlife, especially whales and other marine mammals. They are expensive to build and maintain.  They have lifespans of less than 30 years and must be removed and replaced.  Finally, anyone with a knowledge of basic science once taught in the eighth grade knows that wind turbines cannot power an electric grid for a large city.

An electric grid for a large, modern city needs a steady, reliable flow of energy. Much energy from wind turbines must be dumped and wasted because it is produced when not needed.  When the wind slows down or stops, backup generators must constantly burn oil and natural gas to be ready when the wind stops or slows down.  This wastes carbon, and is also very expensive.  That is why wind turbines cost more than the value of what they produce.

There are already dozens of useless and abandoned wind turbines on land in southern Spain.  You see them from the train that runs between Cadiz and Sevilla.  As with the five wind turbines in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the public was never given enough data to know whether they ever produced enough usable electricity to save fossil fuel or pay for themselves.

In his book Apocalypse Never, respected environmentalist Michael Shellenberger explains that there is only one carbon-free energy source that generates enough steady, reliable, and affordable electricity to power a grid.  That is nuclear power.  France has built nuclear plants for electricity since 1963 and now gets 70% of its electricity from nuclear power. That is why it is one of the few European countries that is now energy self-sufficient.. Why are powerful politicians and big corporations investing so much money and influence pushing wind turbine projects that don’t work, rather than nuclear power plants that do?

My brother Michael is a jazz piano player who lives in Cadiz, Spain.  Unlike me, he has little interest in politics.  However, when he saw above posters on the bulletin board of his gym, he felt a need to take a photo and send it to me.
