The sprawling horse and cattle ranch once owned by iconic actor John Wayne has just been listed for a cool $12 million. Rancho Pavoreal, located in the small agricultural town of Sage in Southern California, sits at the foot of Palomar Mountain just twenty minutes outside of Temecula Wine Country. The 2,000-acre property features a three-bedroom, three-bathroom stucco ranch-style house with sweeping views of the surrounding mountain terrain.
“As an action hero to many, John Wayne’s presence still lives on in Rancho Pavoreal’s very masculine and western aesthetic,” says listing agent Tatiana Novick of Coldwell Banker Realty’s Santa Fe office, who called the spread nestled halfway between San Diego and Palm Springs “very rare.” After the actor's death in 1979 at the age of 72, the property was used as a dude ranch and has been on and off the market since 2018.
The “True Grit” star’s former compound boasts acres of wildlife habitat, desert plateaus, river gorges, high alpine views, and a smattering of Native American artifacts. “Rancho Pavoreal can be used for camps, hunting, horseback riding, cattle grazing, riflery, archery, hiking, a motorcycle ranch–you name it, it has it,” Novick tells House Beautiful.
The ranch was just one of the many residential properties owned by John Wayne during his lifetime. Rancho Pavoreal is located next to a ranch previously owned by Walt Disney.
