Liverpool Chess Club Overview

Liverpool Chess club today is thriving in the heart of Liverpool at our home of “The Bierkeller” on 6-8 Thomas Steers Way, Liverpool ONE, L1 8LW  which is a tremendous venue in terms of location, vibrance and its perfect atmosphere for playing chess. We have 7 teams represented in all Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Merseyside Chess Association leagues catering for players of all standards.

Liverpool are current Merseyside First Division champions 2023 and John Ripley Cup Champions. Liverpool had not won the First Division since 1985 and had not won JR Cup since 1971 so this is an incredible achievement for the club. The Club was founded on 15th December 1837 in the Lyceum building in Bold Street, the club is one of, if not the oldest existing chess club in England today although a number of other clubs were founded before 1837 and records indicting the club existed by at least 1813. In 1892 Liverpool was seen to be the largest chess club in the world with 150 members
