@padcnr has begun spraying for invasive spongy moth outbreaks across 12 state forests and 18 state parks. In 2023, over 440,000 acres of Pennsylvania trees were defoliated, including oak trees. A tree starts to suffer when 30% or more of its leaf surface is lost. Oaks, a keystone species that helps forests thrive, is host to native wildlife and insects and sequesters carbon. Loss of oak trees and other species can be detrimental to the health of PA’s state forests and parks.
