Kristen Cobo and Christina Balestriere both have children in the Roxbury, New Jersey public schools.  Two years ago, Kristen, a clinical social worker specializing in families, was concerned that her local public school was inappropriately sexualizing her children by systematically exposing them to sexually inappropriate materials. She then reached out to other parents with similar concerns. They formed a Roxbury Parental Rights organization to get more parents informed and involved.

Last Monday, the appeared by video at “The Last Stand” Symposium on defending Judeo-Christian values at the New Life Assembly Church on Fernwood Avenue in Egg Harbor Township, NJ.

Last August, Christina learned that sexually explicit books were being made available to young children in public schools in other areas of the country.  She therefore did an online search of books at the library of her child’s high school.  She found that many books were clear pornography even under today’s loose standards.  Many were readily available to young children. One was the notorious “Gender Queer: A Memoir”.

They then expressed their concerns at a Roxbury Board of Education meeting last March 6, 2023.  Three weeks later, they were both visited by a sheriff’s officer.  He served them with papers for a civil lawsuit brought by the school librarian against them for defamation.

Both Cobo and Balestriere claim the lawsuit is a “SLAPP” (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation).  They say it was brought to intimidate not just them, but any parent who wants to voice his or her concerns about the sexualization of young children in our public schools.

Cobo and Balestriere also worked with other parents to replace members of the elected Board of Education.  Last November, they unseated two long term members.  They plan to remove and replace other Board members in the elections this November.

The deadline for filing petitions to be on the ballot as a School Board candidate is the last Monday in July.   This year, it is Monday, July 31.

To improve your chance of winning, reach out to other school board members and political clubs to meet others who share your concerns.  It is also important to run as a team with other candidates, and “bracket” your names together on the ballot.
